A pretty decent year, better than I expected going into it (for some reason) but could use Frank Thomas DHing to give Eric Chavez, Bobby Crosby, et al, some protection, assuming the Big Hurt can stay healthy. I saw them in something like 89 or 90, supporting the truely woeful FBI (whose set included Nelly The Elephant a la Toy Dolls, Peter Gunn and Should I Stay Or Should I Go - just to give you an idea). They were certainly a galaxy away from the shite of FBI, but didn't really do much for me or have since... I did gatecrash a party years ago that turned out to be in the (quite lovely) house owned by their drummer (Loz, I think). He was an *incredibly* nice guy who thanked us for coming before we left. And the new Fall album - Heads Roll. I thought Country On The Click was the best for ages - not quite so keen on this one, but it's still got a few fantastic moments - their cover of The Move's I Can Hear The Grass Grow and my favourite Blindness... Yep - "Blindness" is a good one. Some website or other put up a Peel Session version of it that rocks even more thunderously...not sure if that's from the Peel Cube (which I haven't bought yet). Speaking of bass guitar (re "Blindness"), I have a theory that during the late '80s and early '90s there was a spate of bands with two bass guitars...and then a few years later, a spate of bands with no bass guitars. I'm sure there's some relation here. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Dec 2005 11:01:20 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Re: songwriting and TMI (Oxford "star"fucker) > their cover of The Move's I Can Hear The Grass Grow Whoa! When you can sing "No More Shoes" in the car with your four year old, the world is a happy place. - - Ted Leo / Pharmacists "Shake The Sheets", "Sharkbite Sessions EP" Sorry I missed Ted last winter when he passed through San Jose. "Me And Mia" rocks the world, and his cover of "Six Months In A Leaky Boat" would make Neil Finn smile. - - A Band Of Bees "Free The Bees" "These Are The Ghosts" is stuck in my L1 cache and will not get flushed. That's a good thing. - - The Mars Volta "Frances The Mute" A double machiatto + this album == two hits off the crack pipe - - Portastatic "Bright Ideas" Nice surprise. Better than expected vocals and some good rockin' guitars. - - The Posies "Every Kind Of Light" Stringfellow plus Auer beats the living shit out of Stringfellow solo. John Doe "Forever Hasn't Happened Yet" Great duos on this album. The Flaming Stars "Named And Shamed" A little on the dark moody side, but at least it never gets mired and sluggish. Frank Black Francis "Frank Black Francis" First disc is just the first Pixies demos, but Disc Two is just plain cool. Willie Nelson "Countryman" Willie in da reggae stylee! Teenage Fanclub "Man-made" Been out of touch with them for a while, but this got such good reviews I had to get it. Worth it. - -------- Premiere Acquisitions this year: - - Secret Machines "September 000" A little weird, a lot cool. Do it now. Seriously. Don't even wait until you finish reading this sentence. Charge it to James' account if you have to. It's the coolest fucking thing I've heard in forever, plus drummer Josh Garza is Bonham reincarnated in the 'heavy heartbeat' department (also check out Jules Radino, who's anchoring BOC's live shows now and pops up on a couple current albums by other people). Since that was a 2004 album, it occurs to me that last year now ranks as one of my favorite years for music since about 1987. I figure about nine or ten albums from 2004 will be with me for the rest of my life. > - Kraftwerk "Autobahn", "Trans Europa Express" Hangs head in shame for never buying these... I hope you got the proper AUTOBAHN with the title song in all its 20+ minute glory, instead of the little 8 or 9 minute "mix" versions on iTunes...? > Arcade Fire "Funeral" Not as good as the liberal elite left wing media cabal would like you to believe, but it has its moments. Strangely enough the media seems late to this one, no? I recall Stewart being on this right after it came out (I tried finding it last year at Christmas, and there was like 1 copy in all Chicagoland), and I heard acquaintances buzzing about it early in the year. Well, I believe she's not only a former member of Let's Active, but the former Mrs. Mitch Easter. Which certainly aligns with Yep Roc's bent toward aging college-rockers of the '80s generation. > [demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment of type application/pkcs7- > signature which had a name of smime.p7s] The hell you say. I was going to make some snarky comment about how TIM Finn might feel since it's his song, but then I remembered I'm the jerk who appointed Damo Suzuki the new DCFC singer. And I actually like Ted's solo version on "Tell Balgeary, Balgury is Dead" EP better than the Sharkbite version, though both are pretty damn terrific. Amusing typos do not a jerk make. Clearly Malcom Mooney is taking over DCFC, but don't miss Damo with The Postal Service. Nippokrautindieriffic. I think I could go for a mellow Bunnymen record if Will is prominent. That was my problem with WAYGTDWYL.... it had some really good songs and great vocals, but so little Will that I would've been happier to think of it as the best ever solo McCulloch record. That said, I've just now acquired but not yet listened to a bargain-bin copy of MYSTERIOSO, which is beloved by few, but I need to hear the Robin Guthrie-produced stuff at least once. ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V14 #289 ********************************
