Hey, I'm a Scottish Feg, I don't even like football, and Best's eponymous years were behind him when I was growing up, but he's up there with Pele in icon status. I've also never seen anything with Pat Morita in it ... cheers, Stewart ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Nov 2005 11:32:28 -0800 From: "Marc Alberts" Subject: RE: reap Stewart wrote: > Marc Alberts wrote: > > > > As an American who had no idea who George Best was, I figured it was up > to > > the English Fegs to get off their rears and do a reap for him. > > Hey, I'm a Scottish Feg, I don't even like football, and Best's > eponymous years were behind him when I was growing up, but he's up there > with Pele in icon status. For probably a majority of Americans, when you say "Pele" they say "who?" At least in Scotland you hear a great deal about soccer--here it's a non-sport outside of people who actually play or immigrants. Maybe I should have said "...it was up to a Feg from a country where soccer actually is important to the fabric of popular culture...." > > I've also never seen anything with Pat Morita in it ... I suppose that's possible (although how could anyone have missed his stellar performance in "Lamb Chop's Special Chanukah"?), although the first Karate Kid movie and Happy Days were both iconic in the US. To give you an idea, it's been 21 years since the release of The Karate Kid, yet Bill Simmons of ESPN still devotes probably 2-3 columns a year to dissecting it. That, and "wax on, wax off" is something I don't think we'll ever get away from out here. To give you an idea, it's been 21 years since the release of The Karate Kid, yet Bill Simmons of ESPN still devotes probably 2-3 columns a year to dissecting it. Even outside his two biggest roles, he was also - in Simmons parlance - a classic "that guy" (as in "oh, it's THAT GUY, what's his name..?"). IMDB lists a nearly a couple hundred films/TV/notable appearances and my gut feeling is that's well shy of the mark. Marc: > here it's a non-sport outside of people who actually play or immigrants. Maybe I should have said "...it was up to a Feg from a country where soccer actually is important to the fabric of popular culture...." Fortunately that first bit is patently untrue, but it might be said that George was known in some circles here (even to someone like me, who remotely followed the sport back then) almost as much for his off-the field exploits as on. I think the first photo I ever saw of him was standing in Mallorca or someplace similar; long-haired, tanned, and wearing a Union Jack Speedo with a drink in one hand and a lady in the other. I've no idea what the press would do with him today. Good lord. Michael "these days are ours" Wells ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Nov 2005 16:16:41 -0500 From: "Stewart C. I remember saying to my friends that I'd seen Happy Days the night before, but none of them identified with the being-half-buried-in-the-sand aspect. And the sad thing is, the above isn't a smarter-than-thou internet quip. I really did say that when I was 12 ...
