Sked = Schedule (yes, pronounced with a hard C here) Frosh = Freshman (first of four years in high school, followed by sophomore, junior and senior) Laffer = Laugher i.e., Kitchen Confidential fails to deliver in it's first year. Well, guys, the lingo is irritating and all, but it's pretty much an industry publication, and any industry/profession/subculture develops its own exclusionary terminology, right? And these publications have been written like that for decades. It's just that the inner workinks of th entertainment industry are more interesting to the general public than those of academia or welders' unions or string theorists or whatever. I mean, what the hell are those guys on Sports Radio even saying? You can see parodies of that Hollywood "journalistic" style in films from the '30's. So as a bastardization of the English language, it has a longer lineage than, say, computer tech-speak, rock-critic cliches, Snoop Dogg "izzle"-speak, etc. Which doesn't make it less lame, but it's kinda meant to be impenetrable and sorta knowingly quaint, I think... the dailies also still look like they always have (basically, crappier than they would have to), and I've always thought it was a rare attempt in a rapidly-changing industry to provide a little rare continuity. -the guy who works for the studio with the mountain ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Nov 2005 12:07:50 -0500 From: The Great Quail Subject: Re: Screw you guys! Fox is a vast machine of suck, and no one can make me think any differently. Even the creators of the Simpsons have mostly negative things to say about Murdoch's network. That may be true. But it doesn't prevent the results from sucking. There are ten billion channels now (Springsteen's utterly overrun), yet the notion that that could allow for channels run solely on quality founders on the need to buy up such a station and convert it to being the 100th channel playing the same Rob Schneider movie. > Lauren Graham is hot. The daughter (what's her name) doesn't do much for > me at all. I like her bangs this season though (Alexis Bledel, fwiw). The show works much better if you know the characters, and it's been inconsistent. Problem is, the kind of rapid-fire, screwball dialogue, combined with a cast of characters that's nearly by definition over the top, makes it pretty easy to fail and descend into either cartooniness or just plain annoyingness (Lauren Graham's character is supposed to be so damned cute that her incredible self-centeredness comes off as charming - but when things go wrong, yes, you just want to shoot her). Still, at its best it's a wonderful mix of comedy, character, and situation. Plus I like that despite being initially (still?) funded by some grant benefiting TV for children and teens, it has no truck with being right-wing PC about sex, drugs (and rock'n'roll)... - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Nov 2005 17:07:40 -0500 (EST) From: Christopher Gross Subject: And like most people, I've dealt a little ivory On Fri, 11 Nov 2005, The Great Quail wrote: > Fox is a vast machine of suck, and no one can make me think any differently.
