Rex was a bit puzzled. "What? *Next* Year?" "No, frickin' 2112! Of *course* next year," cried Eb, over the thwup-thwup of the operating carwash. Rex rolled his eyes, but answered, "Yoda, probably." "Yeah, duh. But *puppet*-Yoda, or *CGI*-yoda?" Eb was already getting a little bit perturbed. "I...uhhh... I'm not sure." "Fucking *wanker* you are sometimes!" The attendant was just finishing up drying the car off, and Eb rolled down the window to make payment. "Do you offer release?" The attendant was a bit puzzled. "I...uhhh... I'm not sure what that..." "He wants you to give him a handjob, dude," chuckled Rex. "I didn't know that there was a carwash attendant in Hollywood that he hadn't asked yet." The attendant looked at Rex, back at Eb, then at Rex again; now thoroughly confused. "Oh for the love of--" spat Eb derisively. "Put your hand on my johnson, then rub it back-and-forth until I splatter." Eb reached for his billfold, "I'll give you...lessee, how about--" But the attendant had taken off running like a bat out of hell. "You'll lick my asshole!" promised Eb, angrily waving his left fist back and forth. Rex laughing loudly, surmised, "Frankly, Eb, you're beginning to smell. And for a stud in L.A., that's a handicap." Eb was not amused. "Yeah, you're a regular Jerry fuckin' Lew--" "HOLY FUCK!" Eb interrupted himself. "Is that the time?! We'll miss *Barney*!!" "No, *you'll* miss *Barney*," Rex corrected him. "I don't give a rat's ass about that pretentious purple motherfucker." Eb glared menacingly at Rex before laying down some serious rubber. "Motherfucking *traffic*!" Eb slammed his fist into the steering wheel, before pulling over to the freeway shoulder. Rex looked up from his Donald Duck cartoon, befuddled. "What's going on? You got a flat?" "No, I ain't got a 'flat'," Eb mocked him. "Listen," Eb began, while switching out of his penny loafers and into his running shoes. "Take the car, and meet me at the Brine & Brimstone. If I take it on foot, I just might make it." Eb was about to shut the door, but then thought the better of it. He removed his running shoes, and stripped off his slacks and his speedo, flinging them into the back seat before putting his running shoes back on. "You'd better meet me there you son of a bitch!" he hollered back at Rex as he raced down the embankment; his johnson flailing away like some kind of demented vine snake in the midst of an eplieptic seizure. And the rest of the whole work would do well also. ;-) In fact, never mind what I said - there should be a global law that this entire work be played every 4 hours so that all of mankind may bask in the glory of the wonder that is Aerial. It's that good. >since none of the melodies seemed memorable enough. !? On first listen, each song had *something* that haunted. Amazingly, powerfully, primally. After a couple of plays at work Friday, however, I was thoroughly haunted. I finally got to do my usual initial release listening session early Saturday morning. Positioned between the speakers, laid back on the couch with eyes closed, I drifted through the 2 discs. By the time "somewhere in between" was on, I truly was hypnotized. When "the light, climbing up the aerial" hit, I was fully in tears. It's that good. > Now, after wearing out my new nano on > the album, three quarters of it sounds like single material to me! After my weekend worship, I actually broke out in goose bumps when a coworker mentioned Aerial to me while telling me that she thought of me as she was reading a Kate review in a magazine this weekend. Goose bumps. At the *mention* of "Aerial." It's that good. d~ (It's just so beautiful, It's just so beautiful, It's just so beau..ti..ful) - ------------- Just a couple of brief comments for now, in the dubious and largely regrettable tradition of the IED of old. First, |>oug, of course, totally gets it, as do several other excellent folks we have here among us. Second, anyone who does not recognize Aerial as the most wonderful work of art in the last dozen years just isn't listening hard enough. If you are one of these unfortunate persons, hurry and take IED's prescription for the cure: a. PLAY IT LOUD (as she used to recommend); b. play it TWENTY TIMES THROUGH without leaving your chair and without eating or drinking; and c. FEEL IT! - --------------- I just can't get my head round how amazing this album is. The depth and complexity staggers the imagination. Kate's voice is better than ever. Fuller and more mellow than in her earlier works. The album seems to encompass every musical style known to man. Chamber music in Bertie. Ballads intermingled with funky pop. Birdsong as music. How KOTM changes mood half way through when the guitars kick in. I can hear country and western influences in places and caribbean drums in others. Sunset starts as pure jazz with piano, double bass and percussion. Then 4 minutes in it switches seamlessly to salsa and eventually back again to jazz!!! I mean FFS, you aren't meant to be able to do stuff like this but Kate does it effortlessly. It leaves you wondering if everyone else's music is just one dimensional and she is the only person in the world able to do it in 3D. Pi is a tour de force. The concept is pure genius. An Architect's Dream hypnotizes me. I don't normally get too worked up about music. I mean I like it well enough and have the radio on while I'm working but don't ask me to say whose record I just listened to because I probably won't know their name. Since listening to KOTM a couple of weeks ago though I've been waiting to hear the rest of the album with a desire and impatience that has never gripped me before. I grew up on Kate's music. She's a couple of years older than me so when I was a teenager she was just releasing her first works. I thought she was the most beautiful elfin creature in the world and fantasized about her madly. I remember my uncle 20 years older being infatuated with her too. Then she faded out of existence in the early 90's and I guess we all grew up and moved on and started to forget about her. Suddenly, out of the blue I hear about Aerial and wonder what it will be like and if the magic will still be there. It has exceeded any expectation I could possibly have had a thousand fold. It's breathtaking, sublime, utter genius. What drugs are those reviewers on who say this is bland and disappointing? How long are we going to have to wait for the next installment of her genius? She's already said that making this album nearly drove her mad. Another 12 years? Doesn't matter - I'll wait in the sure knowledge that whatever it is it'll blow all the other pretenders out of the water and rewrite every rule that has become the norm in the interim. The word "genius" is overused and devalued accordingly. In Kate's case, and that of this album, it doesn't even begin to suffice. I can't find better words so I'm going to end this bout of verbal diarrhea and listen to the album some more. - --------------- > I mean FFS, you aren't meant to be able to do stuff like this but > Kate does it effortlessly. We bought our tickets promptly, and a week later a second show was added for the same night. Those that bought tickets first ended up with a 40-45 set by Beck, those that bought them later for the second show got a hour plus set. Mahavishnu Orchestra opened up for Beck and played almost as long as he did. I didn't buy anything else Jeff Beck related for over 25 years. Funny you should mention that, because I thought they were starting to get back on track. That last scene with the mock-village being destroyed by Tobias in the mole suit made me laugh out loud at TV for the first time in a while*. I usually can see when all those different arcs are going to come together, but for some reason that climax just took me totally by surprise. *I woke up Monday morning and realized that I watched a lot of "comedy" over the weekend, and hardly laughed once. This included the George Carlin concert on HBO, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Extras, & The Simpsons. I probably laughed the hardest last weekend when the Chiefs scored the final touchdown against the Raiders with five seconds left in the game. That was great! - -tc ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V14 #262 ********************************
