She was an enjoyable, energetic drummer, and a really sweet, slightly shy person. The band was sounding great when I saw them last March, down in Tucson--I have the set list still laying here on my desk. Okay, I remember vaguely that this has come up before. I don't work for Yep Roc or anything, so I'm not sure why I'm defending them - but I notice two things: 1. they ship through CC Now, so their pricing may not be entirely under their control; 2. they charge $4 to ship, regardless of where you are in the US (I checked). Honestly, while that's a little high, it doesn't really seem that outrageous...and there's definitely no "East Coast" surcharge. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Nov 2005 15:01:04 +1300 From: James Dignan Subject: Re: reap (+1) >It is with a lot of grief and weariness that I announce that tonite's >DMBQ and friends >show @ Club Exit has been cancelled following a tragic car accident >today. October 27, 2005, 3:08 pm For immediate release: October 27, 2006 BILLY BRAGG On February 21, 2006, Yep Roc Records will simultaneously reissue four Billy Bragg back-catalog titles including rare and previously unreleased material, available singly and as a 9-disc box set that will include a booklet, 7 audio CDs and 2 DVDs of vintage live footage. "Trying to change the world by singing about it is a dirty business but someone has to do it." - - Billy Bragg, 1988 England's Billy Bragg, described as a "national treasure" in his home country, has spent the last two decades writing and performing passionate, witty, socially conscious music. In doing so, he's forged a career that's spanned decades, political regimes and musical fashions while managing to endure as a voice for reason and political accountability as well as compassion for his fellow man. Balancing his earthy love songs with the musical activist tradition of the leftist troubadours of old (Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, Woody Guthrie), Bragg, armed only with a cheap electric guitar, traveled the world as a one-man punk-folk ambassador. His well-honed wit and way with a musical hook, not to mention his non-rock star ethic - he once said, "razor blades are for shaving and pound notes are for putting in the bank, not up the nose" - have made him a modern working-class hero. On February 21, 2006, Yep Roc Records will re-issue Bragg's first four releases singly and as a 7-CD box set that will also include 2 bonus DVDs with previously unavailable live footage. This will coincide with Bragg's appearance at Austin's South by Southwest music conference in March 2006, followed by a two-week U.S. tour. First up is 1983's Life's a Riot with Spy vs.. Spy, an EP done on the cheap which went on to sell over 100K copies in the UK alone with no advertising, no video, no rock-star poses. Next up are 1984's Brewing Up With Billy Bragg, Talking to the Taxman About Poetry (1986), and a release that combines the Live & Dubious and Internationale EPs (1988 and 1990, respectively). Each release will feature the re-mastered original and a second disc of bonus material, much of it previously unavailable and handpicked by Billy and longtime Bragg cohorts Grant Showbiz and Wiggy - a labor of love indeed. More punk than folk, Bragg's forcefully strummed guitar and rough-around-the-ages vocals (not to mention thick Cockney accent) belie his keen sense of melody and ability to write instantly memorable pop songs (a la Ray Davies). Maybe the universal nature of Bragg's appeal comes from the fact that he doesn't just deal in the politics of governments and world leaders but also in dynamics of love and sexuality. And while some of these songs are over two decades old, this collection - heard against the current backdrop of faith-based initiatives and global conflicts -- sounds as current as ever in its call for understanding and empathy. Billy Bragg, we need you now more than ever. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Nov 2005 10:22:58 -0800 From: Tom Clark Subject: REAP Sheree North, 72 (!) http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/13102372.htm She was all over TV in the 70's - my formative years. Odd that they are re-issuing The Internationale, while skipping Worker's Playtime. And is _Live & Dubious_ is the same thing as _Help Save the Youth of America_? > Each release will feature the re-mastered original and a > second disc of bonus material, much of it previously > unavailable and handpicked by Billy and longtime Bragg > cohorts Grant Showbiz and Wiggy - a labor of love indeed. I though Billy and Wiggy were on the outs. Nice to see that is no longer the case... My sister, her husband, and I went to visit their nutball friend in Venice Beach. "Life's a Riot" was playing on the turntable, and one of the first things I did upon my return back East was run down to 3rd Street Jazz and pick up a copy. "A New England" still breaks my heart a bit. I think I still know all the lyrics which I can't say of too many songs I came by after age 18 or so (they just don't seem to 'take' regardless of how many times I've heard them.) Said friend also mailed me a copy of "Talking with the Taxman about Poetry" when it came out. Vinyl no less. Is this the line in my post where I make a veiled apology for conveying a personal anecdote? Okay then. xo Lauren - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "People with opinions just go around bothering one another." - The Buddha ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Nov 2005 15:23:09 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: Yep Rock releasing Braggy Goodness On 11/7/05, Lauren Elizabeth (gmail) wrote: > Is this the line in my post where I make a veiled apology for > conveying a personal anecdote?
