Gross-out to the max? "Shivers" fits that bill. Scary? "The shining". Comedy? "Young Frankenstein", or maybe "Bloodbath at the house of death". Domething more exotic? "A Chinese ghost story". For me, if I had to pick something, I'd go for the creepy carnival movies (they always feel more Hallowe'en anyway). Which means "Something wicked this way comes", "The seven faces of Dr. lao", or a marathon screening of episodes of "Carnivale". Here are some other favorite horror movies (favorite, but not necessarily scariest) off the top of my head: - -The Habit - -Freaks - -Near Dark - -The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (which is much less gore-dependent than you might think) - -Alien, of course - -and, above all, Young Frankenstein - --Chris "I hit the fucking brain!" the Halloweenster ______________________________________________________________________ Christopher Gross On the Internet, nobody knows I'm a dog. chrisg@gwu.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Oct 2005 19:03:52 -0700 From: "The Linnig's" Subject: Halloween Flicks Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer freaked me out. Sure, that's fantastic. Also, I forgot to mention "Psycho." Duh. Oh, and "Repulsion" and "Nosferatu" (either version)! Those just popped into my head. Essential. I think I once saw a piece of "The Habit," and really disliked it. Eventually switched channels. And I wouldn't count "Alien" or "Young Frankenstein." Meanwhile, I saw "The Hunger" long ago that I can't even remember whether I liked it or not. Oops. There's a cool vampire movie which I saw awhile back...but, uh, I can't remember the title. I think it was Australian, and the creepy thing I remember is that the vampire colony's victims were imprisoned on tables with IV tubes in a white, refrigerated room, and were being routinely drained of blood like a cow being milked by machine. And they called the room "the dairy." Oh, wait...I just remembered. "Thirst"! Good one. Bucked the formula in interesting ways. Here are a few, with my humble attempt at summarizing: _Don't Look Now_ 70's Julie Christie and Donald Southerland (make a fabulous couple), directed by Nicolas Roeg. Psychic thriller classic set in earie Venice. Creepiest ending of all time! _Carnival Of Souls_ Fabulous 1960's B movie. Lots of nice camp with fabulously haunting scenes of ghosts dancing in an abandoned carnival and the most amazing soundtrack (we played the main theme at our wedding). _Donnie Darko_ (the original, NOT the director's cut) One of my favorite contemporary movies. Raw and unpolished and lets you think for yourself, unlike most major releases. _I'm Not Scared_ Contemporary Italian. Set in the Italian countryside, it deals with a touching story about young boy who discovers a terrifying secret. Completely genuine to how a young person might handle the situation. __________________________________ Yahoo!
