A slight _relative*_ dip, but it did that the first couple episodes last season as well. By the 4th or 5th episode, it was back up to speed. The Bob Lablaw thing is a bit obvious (down to having Scott Baio essentially replace Henry Winkler, though that aspect could pay off later, I suppose, if Baio has actually learned to act some time in the past 15 years). And really, if you are going to have Charlize Theron as a guest star, let her be hot! "Uglying" up hot chicks isn't funny; it's just annoying. And it's not like she needs to prove she can act at this point. "I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." -- Mitch Hedberg . __________________________________ Yahoo! The ratings are even worse this year than in the past and Fox has done even less to promote it this year. I think the suits regretted picking it up the second after they did it and have been desperately trying to get out of it ever since while still looking like they supported the show. They're probably wishing they'd shitcanned it halfway through the first season after having run episodes out of order, put out a massively well-received DVD, then made a movie of it. I've gotten more grossly flawed recordings from MD recordists than any other class of device. SKIPS on a digital recording? Ridiculous. Breaks at the 74- or 80-minute mark, right in the middle of a song? No good reason for that. Yeah, I know the High-MDs were starting to overcome some of those limitations, and to provide some usable duration of lossless recording, but, like ya say, even with those, the potential wasn't quite fully realized. I've got one of these M-Audio buggers on order: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MicroTrack-main.html I've already been using a Marantz PMD660 for a little while, but it's just too freakin' big for my usual taping purposes, and doesn't provide any other real functional advantage over DAT. The M-Audio MicroTracker will go up to 24-bit 96KHz stereo, and with CF cards getting bigger and cheaper, it won't be too long before it'll be practical to tape full-length shows at that quality. da9ve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Oct 2005 14:37:05 -0700 From: "Hurricane Jesus" Subject: Finally! i've finally heard an '05 album worthy of being selected the year's best: *Silent Alarm*, by bloc party. slag it off as sounding too much like interpol if you must; but i think it kick's interpol's arse halfway around the, uh, block. My impression is that they're another one of those "skittish" recent- gen bands which gets compared to Gang of Four and early XTC. No? Kate Bush's upcoming double CD has only 16 tracks? Hrm. I've seen them twice now, and I get a hint (*hint*) of General Public for whatever reason. They've really, really grown on me, though. (And I can't see any Interpol or XTC similarities) The most recent gig here at the Variety was their last of the US tour and it *rocked*. Very impressive.
