No McGuinn, which is faintly surprising. There was one short clip of the Byrds singing "Tambourine Man" on a variety show, and a little interview clip after that where Dylan spoke somewhat disparagingly about all the "jingle-jangle" hits which drew from his work. He said something about the Byrds having a hit, along with "some band called the Turtles" and Sonny & Cher...so, perhaps, this middling respect for the Byrds partially explains why McGuinn wasn't interviewed. Meanwhile, Geddy Lee wasn't even *mentioned*, much less interviewed. I don't get it. His set went down well, although a large proportion of the audience was perplexed by the thoughts he expressed on Dr. Who, Aliens and the importance of Bob. The concert was recorded for television, to be shown on BBC4 (a digital channel) on Friday 30th, 8.30-10.30pm, so they will cut out quite a bit of the show, which was nigh on four hours long. However they're bound to show every artist at least once, so if anyfeg can record it that would be great. I can't get digital TV personally but hopefully one of the UK list members has the facilities to get BBC4. If not, I expect the concert will eventually find its way to terrestrial TV. Other standout artists were Odetta, Liam Clancy and KT Tunstall. Odetta did the most incredible version of Mr. Tambourine Man, Liam Clancy told some great tales of playing with Dylan in the early days, and KT got everyone rocking at the end. I was really impressed with her - surely to become a huge star. Robyn came on with everyone else for the final encore but spent the song trying to hide at the back with the keyboardist! Charlotte ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Sep 2005 09:39:28 +0100 From: "Charlotte Tupman" Subject: Guardian review of Dylan tribute Just seen this brief review: Talking Bob Dylan Blues Barbican, London Robin Denselow Wednesday September 28, 2005 The Guardian "It's great that we're doing this while he still walks the earth," announced Robyn Hitchcock, and that summed up this strange, unexpectedly emotional event. Tribute shows normally occur when an artist dies, but here was a packed Barbican honouring the fact that the most influential songwriter of his age has actually given an interview (albeit to his manager), and that this has allowed Martin Scorsese to construct his two remarkable biographies of Bob Dylan's early life for BBC TV's Arena. It was just too bad that Part One was running while this show took place, for everyone in the audience ought to have watched it, after first reading Dylan's autobiography Chronicles, to get full value from what was taking place on stage. For here, live and in remarkably good form, were many of the characters who appear in the film and the book. The show was far too long (over four hours), but it was cleverly constructed, with readings from Chronicles introducing many of the performers. Billy Bragg, who acted as MC, was preceded by Dylan's friendly words about himself ("I know that passage by heart," said Bragg). He was followed by Martin Carthy, who played The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll and gave a remarkable description of how he and Dylan chopped up a piano for firewood with a samurai sword in London during the cold winter of 1962. I trust that a blue plaque will now be erected outside 184 Haverstock Hill. Then there were the Greenwich Village set. Liam Clancy mixed the Irish rebel songs that so influenced the young Dylan with stories about the legendary White Horse Tavern in New York, where they met, and then led a bizarre sing-along to Those Were the Days, which was written there. The best performance of the night came from the veteran gospel and blues singer Odetta, whom Dylan massively admired, and who makes a powerful appearance in the Arena film. Backed by a pianist, she now sat to sing her highly distinctive, soulful treatments of Tomorrow Is a Long Time and Mr Tambourine Man, transforming them into songs of her own. She was a hard act to follow, but Hitchcock provided a welcome reminder of Dylan's best recent work with a thoughtful Not Dark Yet, KT Tunstall and her band tackled songs from Blood on the Tracks and cabaret star Barb Jungr showed remarkable bravery with her quietly theatrical treatment of Like a Rolling Stone. Then there was Roy Harper, mysteriously following a fine version of Girl From the North Country with his homage to the Ashes, When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease. Absolutely nothing to do with Dylan, but a glorious song. I suspect that Bob would have approved. I hadn't realised that Roky Eriksson was still alive, let alone performing. Sky Saxon was in Bristol last year but I couldn't face it. There is always the possibility that these comebacks will be great, but I'm afraid that usually they are embarrassing. On the Dylan film, McGuinn wasn't the only absentee. Where was C P Lee, who wrote a whole book about the Manchester gig? Or John Bucklen, his Minneapolis guitar playing partner, who was the main contributor to that 'Highway 61' documentary that went out in the 80s? Did anybody else see the 'Newsnight' interview with the bloke who shouted 'Judas' who was pumping gas in a Canadian town until he died? I would have liked to see that again, but I can understand why they left it out. I think they included a reasonable sample of anti-Dylan voxpops (oddly from Newcastle rather than Manchester): "I came to see a folk singer, not a pop group!" etc. But of course he denied that he was a folk singer; or a protest singer; or a topical songwriter. But the documentary showed that he was all of those things, and more. - - Mike Godwin PS Does anyone know what Dylan song Robyn is performing on the Friday show?
