This is a good sounding aud, although the first half of the first song was recorded at a low volume. Coming up: the November 2004 shows in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. Without any further delay, here are Max's notes: Robyn Hitchcock @ Scranton Cultural Arts Center November 11, 2004 CMC-4>SP-SPSB-2>MZ-NH900>USB>Sonic Stage>Wav Converter>AA>Flac This is a HI-MD recording recorded in pcm format. Recorded 25' from stage way off in the hinterlands to the side of the stage This is the first of four Robyn shows I saw over the course of a week. This one was in Scranton, PA. This was N O T a request show, I don't know if this was the last non-request show but it must be one of them. I have a feeling Robyn might have kown that the crowd might not know his catalog too well. A copy of his written setlist is included in the CD covers. This venue is actually a church or temple of some sort, so the sound is cavernous to say the least. The spoken parts are very quiet in comparison to the musical sections. Also the sound is a bit on the 'hissy' side due to the sound system. He wanders through the crowd for the last few songs so a lot of it is quiet distant sounding, if not nearly inaudible. I really enjoyed this show, even though I got lost on the way home! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Sep 2005 02:10:19 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Have folks heard about this? http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetail.lasso?Number=74639 Two Soft Boys tracks...and some other Feggy bands here and there. I can't say that I'm dying to own this, actually. I already own about 20 of the tracks, and the rest? Ehhhh.... Does anyone want to endorse some of the more obscure tunes? Oh, and who has heard "(I Thought) You Wanted to Know" by the dB's? I assumed that I had this, but...I guess not. Rare single on the Car label, according to the Web? I also find myself missing one of the Teenage Fanclub songs. "Arrested Development" and Jessica Walter were robbed. That is all. Eb ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Sep 2005 00:57:32 -0700 From: "Marc Holden" Subject: Thanks After hearing all the rave reviews of the Decemberists here, I decided that I needed to go see them. They are great live--I'm still not entirely blown away by them on CD, but they seem to go into overdrive in concert. If you get a chance to see them on this tour, make sure you're on time, because the opener, Sons & Daughters, are also excellent. I talked to Colin Meloy for a couple of minutes after the show. He seemed a bit worried when I teased him about making Robyn open for him in Portland. He's a really nice guy, and I look forward to catching them again. Time for sleep. Later, Marc To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And, at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between, plus some things I can't remember, all rolled into one big "thing." This is truth, to me. I'm not sure this set is a good idea. It muddies the conception of "Nuggets" as a "brand name" and a distinct style. It might have been better to simply work on licensing a Bomp/Voxx boxset, or something like that. Otherwise...Guided by Voices? Half Japanese? Let's Active? Matthew Sweet? The Young Fresh Fellows? The Boo Radleys? The Flaming Lips? Mudhoney? Redd Kross? The Ramones? Shonen Knife? The Velvet Crush and/ or Monkeys? Perhaps most of all, the Muffs?? There's just too much grey area here. Though considering that the set has FAR too many artists with more than one track included, they certainly might have worked in some of the above names. I will put in a plug for United States of Existence, since they were from Baltimore. Don't believe they ever played live but their album is great! The main guy in the band, Dennis Davison, migrated to L.A. after that and formed Jigsaw Seen, who had a few albums in the 90s. Doubt they're still around though. > I also find myself missing one of the Teenage Fanclub songs. > Which one? God Knows It's True? That was on a single. My guess is that they thought the Julian Cope song covered The Teardrops and that The Bunnymen were too popular (comparatively speaking). "Mink Dress" is a very early single - in fact, a nearly identical version was recorded by the band's predecessor act Arousing Polaris. This version is probably the same one that appeared on a rather hard-to-find collection (on the renowned Timothy's Brain label, a few years back) called _Mink Dress and Other Cats_. I kinda prefer the track's contemporary, "Office Skills" ("I dictate and I dictate and I dictate 'cos it's fun!"). > I'm not sure this set is a good idea. I kind of agree on the "muddying the concept" bit - although I suppose the "children of" designator makes it clear we're talking about later acts influenced by the original Nuggets folks... As for all the acts you name: yep... Could be licensing issues, could be reserved for a next volume, who knows. I mean, an enormously huge swath of contemporary music could arguably be called "children of Nuggets" - so I'm sure anyone could spend a lot of time arguing for/against various acts' inclusion. I will say, though, that even though I like the Posies pretty well, I really don't see how they fit all that well. I guess that's because I'm thinking of "Nuggets" in terms of garage and psych as the two main threads...even though in the '80s LP series of Nuggets releases, there were a couple of albums devoted to soft pop of a post-Hollies/Bee Gees kind. And clearly, the Posies fit in that lineage pretty well. I'll probably buy it eventually: I have some of the tracks, but not a lot of them - and it's probably as good aplace to collect obscurities as any... - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Sep 2005 16:31:34 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: Have folks heard about this? > "Mink Dress" is a very early single - in fact, a nearly identical > version was recorded by the band's predecessor act Arousing Polaris. > This version is probably the same one that appeared on a rather > hard-to-find collection (on the renowned Timothy's Brain label, a few > years back) called _Mink Dress and Other Cats_. It's a safe bet that the "1976-1995" subtitle is an omen of a further volume to come.
