Actually I find it rather depressing. Oh, I don't know. I think Hitchens comes out of the transcript rather well - obviously he always looks like he's on the side of the teachers, even though he isn't, really, and that will always wind up those who wanted to be some kind of alternative head boy - and he's always pompous, and usually dull, but... - it seems fairly clear, even from this selected piece of crap, that he works hard to try to maintain perspective and clarity. I like Galloway. Sometimes righteous anger, indiscretion, experience, plus a good dose of self-importance, can cut through an awful lot of crap. Of course, once you've cut through some of the crap, you find that he's not always a very good tool for doing anything about it; you can't put things back together with a knife, or a loose cannon. But you can't fault the man for his testimony to the Senate. If he had been an American, there would be a film in production. Try as I might, I can't sustain any anger or disappointment with Amy Goodman. She does okay. The endless hysteria and self-promotion of all these people - particularly Jane Fonda - is tiresome, and would seem counter productive in the end, but perhaps that's just a British perspective. xjim ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Sep 2005 13:51:35 +0100 From: M R Godwin Subject: Re: Patrick Hamilton Apropos of nothing, I thought I'd mention the Patrick Hamilton bio which was on BBC4 yesterday. Almost perfect identikit thirties writer, big theatrical hits with "Rope" and "Gaslight", wrote several best selling novels, then drank himself to death. Stupidly they showed a clip of the Hollywood version of Gaslight featuring Charles Boyer rather than the classic British version with the wonderful Anton Walbrook as the sadistic husband. Pink Floyd 1966-67 DVD, which is absolute rubbish unless you like seeing brief shots of Syd using a cigarette lighter as a guitar slide.
