If I'd known you were up front for Robyn, I would have joined you. I got up pretty close but felt lonely, so I retreated to the feg enclave on the other side of the age divide (there was truly a small walkway between the over and under 21s). I got Miriam and Natalie to join me up front for Colin. None of you has ever seen Kurt Vonnegut speak? Oy (that was a Jewish oy and not a Cockney one). Steve, definitely read Cat's Cradle, Mother Night, and Player Piano. I think Breakfast of Champions is inferior to all of those. His short stories are pretty wonderful, too. Come to think of it, I have a mental image of Vonnegut giving his lecture on "graphing" story action, as explained in Palm Sunday. But I can't remember at *all* where I saw this. Weird. Well, you're not alone there. Ms. Atwood has that effect on a lot of people. It's been forever for a fegbooks summary, eh? I'm just about done with Michael Palin's travelogue "Sahara" (found in the discount bin at the grocery store), as well as picking at one of The Onion's compendiums. On vacation I started (and am still absorbing) Richard Dawkin's "The Blind Watchmaker," a treatise on evolution as clean and clear as any I've read. Then there's a whole effin' pile of stuff waiting, including Dan Simmons' "Ilium" and "Olympus," "Disneywar," "The Big Picture" and a whole separate pile of non-fiction. We'll see how much free time I *think* I have. The fall is starting to creep onto the tops of a few trees here, and the nights are turning cooler. The smell of burning leaves weaves through the evening air. Of course, you all know what these symbols mean: a) It's a time of harvest, and of renewal. A chance to ponder the cyclical inevitability of nature, and take stock of one's place in the world. b) Using ones lighter, it's time to discretely test the flammability of Christmas decorations set up in the stores this past week. c) FOOTBALL! Yay, football! Actually the answer is d) None of the above. It's time for me to have an annual Robyn phase, which really took hold driving home tonight. A perfect evening, window down, and "Wax Doll" playing. Ah, bliss.
