Am in Belfast. There have been helicopters over the city at night (heard they cost 60K an hour!) and all the rest associated with this street violence carp. The buses are cancelled because they are torching them. I am working in a city east of Belfast and currently staying in Belfast. So now I am taking alternatives - the train and the 12 block walk from the station. Hopefully things will calm down and it'll get back to some kind of normal. I've been a bad Feg. I haven't seen Robyn in at *least* two years. Why? Because he's played only in Seattle the last few years, and bad circumstances impeded my way up to Belltown each time. So, imagine my delight when Robyn and Colin Meloy showed up at the Crystal Ballroom last Thursday. But why, oh why, was Colin's name BIGGER than Robyn's on the ticket? Well, Robyn's a big boy, I thought. He can take it. My friend and I had drinks at Ringler's Annex (Portlland's premier underground bar) next to the venue during the first act, then strolled over to the Crystal Ballroom just before 9. I had no trouble getting right up front for Robyn's set. I knew that Scott McCaughey was playing with Robyn, so I was pleasantly thrilled when Peter Buck casually strolled onstage to plug in his guitar. Peter's sporting a new, spiky haircut these days. A little "swoon!" ripped through me but I kept my cool. Robyn took the stage not long afterwards. Flowered shirt, purple jeans, black shoes. A guy named Bill (I forget his last name) was the drummer, with Scott and Peter playing guitar and bass. I didn't write down the setlist because I'm just not a geek--but! he did open with "Chinese Bones," do "I Often Dream of Trains," "Nietzche's Way" (kind of a snoozer), and closed the show with "Underground Sun," a new song from his upcoming album (a little bird told me that Robyn and the boys had been recording it all week in Seattle). Seeing Robyn after a couple year's absence is like seeing an old boyfriend--I watched and smiled and thought, "ahh, that's why I fell in love with him!" After an hour, Robyn and the boys left the stage to plaintive cries of "Come back!" Alas, they did not. Boo! Colin Meloy came on afterwards, quiet and slightly sheepish looking, saying, "I don't know how I'm supposed to follow that, but I'll try." Now since I'm the only person who has not seen the Decemberists yet, I'm pleased to report that I became utterly enchanted by Colin's wistful, pirate-y, dreamy lyrics. His songs are the perfect mixture of Morrissey, the Smiths, and Robyn. I think I'm a convert! My last bus to St Johns left shortly after midnight. Oddly, I saw no Fegs from my vantage point up front. After Colin left the state, I went to the bar area in the back to say goodbye to my friends before I left for home. The guy at the bar barked to check my ID (silly man), so as I fished thru my purse, a clarion voice rang out. "Hi Carole!" Ooh, it was Michael Wolfe, who I haven't seen in *years* since I moved to St Johns and became a hermit. I gave him a hug, and asked if there were any other Fegs there. "Oh yes!" he said, and rattled of a litany of Fegs who must've been standing on the right hand side of the stage. I only had time to say hi to Nat and I met Jill briefly, but I would literally turn into a pumpkin if I stayed any further. I had no car and had no funds for a cab ride home. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2005 19:30:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Capuchin Subject: Hey LA Fegs and others...
