Yeah, that version can do it to ya. I was most disappointed to hear a more traditional version, and find it was a rather mechanical Cajun stomper. It's not the way I look at these guys myself (though I can't really describe how I see them), but I thought I'd post it anyway. ********************************************************************** Robyn Hitchcock and Colin Meloy write songs worthy of highest honors. Robyn Hitchcock and Colin Meloy are like those kids who skipped a few grades in school, never to be heard from again. You know, kind of quirky, super smart, and often teased for their hyperactive imaginations. Much like those ultra-intellectual kids, these contemporary songwriters let their music run on whims of wit and wonder. While the mediocre majority strums away about broken hearts, Meloy and Hitchcock choose to travel an untrodden path. Meloy, best known as lead singer of one of Portland's most popular and critically lauded outfits, the Decemberists, pens wry, literate and often comedic tales about old maids, chimney sweeps and prepubescent boys. While the Decemberists are known for offbeat idiosyncrasies and colorful theatrics, Meloy's solo set equally engages his audience with crowd pleasers like Cheap Trick's "Southern Girls" and bare-bones versions of Decemberists' favorites such as "Red Right Ankle." Considered one of the most eccentric songwriters of the past two decades, Hitchcock crafts oddball folk-rock songs that are equally witty. Sometimes jangle-pop, sometimes neo-psychedelic, sometimes college rock, the songs tend to make you think more than feel. But in all their zaniness and cynicism, Hitchcock's music retains the power to move his audience. Having released dozens of records to critical acclaim since his 1981 debut, the prolific Hitchcock still has a lot of ground to cover. Songwriters as unique as Meloy and Hitchcock don't come around often, and seldom perform on the same bill. So mark your schedules and come make good with the smart kids. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Sep 2005 09:22:14 -0400 From: "Brian Nupp" Subject: Of Montreal live Ann Arbor review Wow. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Sep 2005 11:14:58 -0400 (EDT) From: Christopher Gross Subject: Re: Point your browser... I was wondering how they would do the album stuff live and it was perfect. >My recording, though astonishing clear for an aud, has an >iRiver-induced >loud tick every 57 seconds. Arse. My minidisc kept stopping for some reason. I don't think I captured much of the show. Crap! I wouldn't mind getting a copy of yours...? The opening act was good too (not as good! but entertaining). I traded my cd for their cd after the show. - -Nuppy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Sep 2005 12:07:59 -0700 From: Eb Subject: reap R.L. I thought I read that Toussaint is amongst those stranded at the Superdome. I hadn't heard anything about Chilton. "I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." -- Mitch Hedberg .
