Possibly the worst showoff I've ever heard who wasn't in a prog band. Check, please!" I look back on The Stranglers fondly as being the first headlining band I ever saw and if you think that Hugh Cornwall has no charisma you should see the sad case that's currently fronting the reformed band that I had the misfortune to see at the "Holidays In The Sun" punk festival in Morecombe in May this year. I couldn't agree more.... Everything in my little digital domain is EAC->LAME with UberNet settings and I'm a very happy bunny. On another note... Matt Sewell's band 'The New Moon' and Anton Barbeau were both very enjoyable at "Wittstock" on Sunday, worth venturing down as far south in Oxfordshire for old unadventurous me. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Aug 2005 10:27:47 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: Stranglers/Hugh MPys2626@aol.com wrote: > First three elpees, "Rattus Norvegicus", "No More Heroes" and > "Black and > White" are still very play worthy here @ Casa m. It's also the tone, which assumes both a weird proprietary vibe and that even for personal use mp3s are "forbidden." I mean, it's one thing to suggest that, since the person who encoded them isn't making a profit, it would be inappropriate for someone else to do so - it's the peremptory "Don't EVER" all-caps, with the pathetic attempt at ingratiation "please" at the end. A simple "not for sale" would suffice - or even a reference to the appropriate Creative Commons license. The mp3 reminds me of Frank Lloyd Wright, insisting that people who purchased houses he designed not move or alter the furniture... - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Aug 2005 14:11:09 -0500 From: "Michael Wells" Subject: RE: NEW on DIME: Robyn Hitchcock 4-3-2005 Duncan Hall Soundboard MD Master DISC THREE > It's also the tone, which assumes both a weird proprietary vibe and > that even for personal use mp3s are "forbidden." That is completely wrong. As Aaron noted, the statement is against sharing mp3 copies, rather than the lossless version(s). "Do not encode to mp3" doesn't mean you can't do so for your own personal use - just don't distribute it that way. In this particular instance (Robyn and a board recording) the taper specifically mentions the time and trouble he went through to obtain and master the recording, let alone do the artwork, etc. As someone who would share the benefit of this process, the least you can do is honor the incredibly reasonable requests of the people working to make it happen. What he said was, "Don't EVER sell, buy or encode to MP3 please." And I still think that no one has a right to tell someone else that they can't, say, encode for their own use an mp3 copy, and then share *that* with a friend. And please note that I said "share" - not sell. I completely understand why someone who did go through such effort would be resentful at someone else profiting from his labors. > > In this particular instance (Robyn and a board recording) the taper > specifically mentions the time and trouble he went through to obtain and > master the recording, let alone do the artwork, etc. As someone who > would share the benefit of this process, the least you can do is honor > the incredibly reasonable requests of the people working to make it > happen. As I said: asking not to sell (and warning people not to pay for) the music is perfectly reasonable and understandable. Asking people not to distribute mp3s is somewhat reasonable, although rather dubious. *Ordering* people not to make mp3s is obnoxious - no matter how much effort the person went through. "Don't EVER...encode to MP3" is obnoxious. The phrasing and tone is what was irritating, not the don't-sell request. Now please relax, listen to some nice Rush music, and work out your frustrations with a vigorous round of Peart-imitating air-drumming ;) Meanwhile, uh...music is good. Yes. - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Aug 2005 20:24:16 -0400 From: FSThomas Subject: Re: NEW on DIME: Robyn Hitchcock 4-3-2005 Duncan Hall Soundboard MD Master DISC THREE Jeff wrote: > ...What he said was, "Don't EVER sell, buy > or encode to MP3 please." > > And I still think that no one has a right to tell someone else that > they can't, say, encode for their own use an mp3 copy, and then share > *that* with a friend. It's got more than a little RIAA tone to it when it's stated that way. Blech. Either way, it's a kicking recording. - -f. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Aug 2005 19:39:12 -0700 From: "michael wells" Subject: Robyn at Bumbershoot (sort of) One tidbit gleaned from spending some time with Mr. John Wesley Harding this past weekend is the following, which may or may not be considered "scoop" but I did get his permission to post it here. Wes is performing a multi-part spectacular - would that be a "Westacular"? - that will in some form include the Love Hall Tryst (Wes, Brian Lohmann, and local gals Nora O'Conner and Kelly Hogan doing tight harmony a cappella), a string quartet.and apparently Robyn acting as a narrator, reading passages from Wes' book between songs and singing with the omnipresent Scott McCaughey. Go here fore more info http://www.bumbershoot.com/lineup/artist/john-wesley-harding and by all means go to the gig - Wes is in top form, as perhaps Dolph can attest. Certainly they were older than the average punk band and had a more rockist approach than, say, the Vibrators. I spoke briefly to Hugh Cornwell once about his association with Robert 'Wait for Me' Williams, of the Magic Band, and he told me that Robert had a record out called 'Buy This Record', which I have never tracked down. That single 'Golden Brown' was on the radio for years afterwards. Like 'Perfect Day', I don't think that the programmers spotted that it was all about drugs. - - Mike Godwin n.p. Cheers Matt http://www.jazzbutcher.com/htdb/gigs/2005/Sep2.html Masters of Budvar present our headliner: TIM KEEGAN I first saw Tim Keegan play in 1986, when he was still a student and his band opened for the JBC. He has been making music ever since, leading his bands Homer, The Homer Lounge and The Departure Lounge through a succession of delicious recordings and worldwide concert tours. He has collaborated with Robin Hitchcock and played in the Blue Aeroplanes' veritable Foreign Legion of ace guitar-slingers. He is in the front rank of original British songwriters, comparable with Ray Davies, Morrissey or Boo Hewerdine. I don't - at this stage - know in what format he will be appearing, but he is somebody that I have dreamed of booking for Masters of Budvar since we opened, and I have no doubt that - however he presents his music - he is guaranteed to be sensational. Masters of Budvar present our guests: THE MAX EIDER EXPERIENCE Ladies and gentlemen, the elegantly-wasted JBC guitar supremo has himself a supergroup. On the drums is June Miles-Kingston, who drummed and sang on about 85% of all listenable British hits of the nineteen-eighties. Remember the cool girlie harmonies on those calssic Funboy Three singles? June. On guitar is Simon Mawby, whose past credits include tours and records with The Woodentops, The House of Love and The Communards. On bass, flying in from Los Angeles, is Mister Steven "Twin Cadillac" Valentine, bass player of the Jazz Butcher Conspiracy, and on guitar and vocals, none other than the man himself, Max Eider. And their first ever performance? Why, it's right here at Masters of Budvar. And it's at nine-thirty, so don't even consider being late. Masters of Budvar present our guests: THE NEW MOON Making a welcome return to Masters of Budvar, Matt Sewell and his posse from Oxford bring a lovely, swirling acoustic sound with shades of Hitchcock Robin and Buckleys Jeff and Tim. Infamous for having written a song about Terry Walpole's camera, The New Moon make a cracking start to possibly the best bill that the Masters of Budvar have yet hosted. It's at the Labour Club, Charles Street, Northampton on Friday 2nd September 2005. It's free to get in, the vibes are friendly, the beer is cheap, the lights are pretty, the PA is warm and the speeches are short. Doors are open from 7:30pm and the first act will take the stage at nine o'clock sharp. The Masters of Budvar thank you. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2005 05:23:58 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: Stranglers M R Godwin wrote: > I spoke briefly to Hugh Cornwell once about his > association with Robert 'Wait for Me' Williams, of the > Magic Band, and he told me that Robert had a record out > called 'Buy This > Record', which I have never tracked down.
