It's going to be very interesting to see if Rubin can revitalize Neil Diamond's "cred" in the same way he did for Cash. Oddly, I just had this argument with my brother in Allentown. I said that *clearly* Moving Pictures was their masterpiece, and he just snorted and pointed to his "Caress of Steel" shirt. I argued my point with great finesse, to which he just shook his head and said, "Pussy." We wrote a song called "Arthur" (The chords were simply A for the verse, a bridge in F# then back to A, hence the title - AAAF#A). In any case myself and the bassist both wanted to write the lyrics, so we each took off into different rooms for half an hour and wrote a verse. Different subjects, different melodies. The finished song had Derek singing a verse, then me singing a verse, then us both singing the last verse. Loads of fun but very weird to listen to. The song was about a man called Arthur going to his doctor and asking to be turned into a dog, and another man walking into town and being followed by a frog (the frog was called Arthur). Perhaps you had to be there. Actually, this sort of process fascinates me. I've often thought it would be entertaining to "assign" musicians various "tasks" in songwriting... For example, give two musicians the same chord sequence and lyrics, and ask each to set the lyrics to a melody that goes with the chords. Record them independently, then put 'em together. Or given the same chords and melody, assign a lyrical topic to two writers...again, record the two different lyrics at the same time. Along the same lines, Ye Olde Tribute Album is pretty played out...at least in the "let's cover songs by Band X" model. Although I know the practical reasons why this doesn't happen, it'd be far more interesting if a tribute album were made up of songs written *by* the various acts in attempts to write a "Band X" song. Yesterday, I downloaded the complete works of Death Cab For Cutie. I deleted it about an hour later. It was ungodly amounts of dull in three and a half minute chunks. Am I missing something?
