Because I notice there's nothing here more recent than '87 or so, and most of it's from the '60s and '70s. I like all of those albums pretty well, and love several - but they're no longer the meat of my listening. Partly that's because when I was a young fanatic person with more time than money or employment, I listened to many of these to such an extent I still have nearly their every note memorized: I simply don't *have* to listen to them as often. But more relevantly, I'm still listening to a lot of new music - - although I will say a lot of my own "all-time best" titles (probably different from current faves) are more recent, certainly several from the '90s and probably a couple from the current decade would make the list. Three titles that would make my all-time faves list leap to mind, from the '70s, '80s, and '90s respectively: Marquee Moon, Murmur, Secaucus (narrowly edging out Silver). - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Aug 2005 14:34:32 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: cricket, Shirley, and music Jeff wrote: > Just curious: are these the albums you listen to most, or just your > all-time faves? But seriously folks: are you saying you listen to everything in your collection more or less equally - and that if it doesn't rise to the level of "favorite" (i.e., worthy of being listened to at the same level as everything else) you just get rid of it? That would be an unusual listening strategy. (The true geek strategy here would be to have a database that keeps track of what you've listened to - and to listen to things only in some order: alphabetical, in order from longest to shortest CD, whatever...) I'd say most people consciously play their favorite music more often. Some people (raises hand) often feel compelled to keep finding *new* music...but even then, I'll go back to older stuff, either becaue I feel I haven't yet familiarized myself with it, or because it is, in fact, a favorite (something I know well and like a lot). - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Aug 2005 15:01:21 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: cricket, Shirley, and music Jeff wrote: > But seriously folks: are you saying you listen to everything in your > collection more or less equally - and that if it doesn't rise to the > level of "favorite" (i.e., worthy of being listened to at the same > level as everything else) you just get rid of it? Of course that doesn't mean I've never heard them, I just haven't played them through iTunes since importing all my CD's. The goal is to dwindle that playlist down to nothing. But I just can't imagine listening to any Guided By Voices or Robert Pollard record more than once. Makes me just want to brush my teeth. But I also can't listen to XTC or Elvis Costello more than fortnightly. Also, the inclusion of Apollo 18 stymies me. That album, above all their others, seems dated and even pretentious. Fingertips were brilliant and Mammal is sweet, but for the most part -- oh, wait. I get it now. That record kind of fits in with the GBV and XTC. Me, I'd choose Factory Showroom, but I've written that here before. Off the top of my head (based on repeated listening more than anything else): Factory Showroom Pet Sounds The Queen Is Dead Everything Is Possible The Different Story (World Of Lust And Crime) Black Foliage Underwater Moonlight Encore Hallowed Ground In The Aeroplane Over The Sea Alternates: Au Pairs Black Celebration The Juliet Letters American Idiot Queen Elvis Honey, I'm Homely I'm sure I could do better. Probably should let my gtkpod database keep track of listening frequency. But most of the time, I put the entire collection on random. This is only pop records. GOD. that RULES!! i don't know what's cooler -- that y'all did that, or that it elicited a hoo-hah-riffic response. ...but, shouldn't it have been "fuck-witted"? <"Signage" is an ugly word, there's no denying it> i for one think it's a lovely word -- but i think i like *all* words ending in "-age". <35. The Dead Milkmen> you are a bitch. you know that? e-mail me offlist ('cause i'm far too lazy to compose a separate e-mail...). do we know (well, i know *i* don't know -- is that sufficiently rumsfeldian for you?) whether it's riskier than using optical media as a repository (or, for that matter, a suppository)? i would guess that we'll run out of the means to power the devices with which to read the information long before the information vanishes from the media. (and here i am just thinking about wanting to recycle a bunch of old magazines if i can't move 'em via craigslist...) for what it's worth, the promo version of *Hanky Panky* does that -- to, surprisingly enough, very underwhelming effect. well, it's not chronologically sequenced. but you get the idea.
