No Commercial Potential is great if you can find it. I picked up "Frank Zappa: The Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play" a while back, but haven't had time to read it. I'm under the impression that it's really only for the more obsessive fan. I probably won't get around to reading that one for a while. I gather that the new gay/lesbian channel LOGO will be rerunning all the "Wonderfalls" episodes on Thursday nights. The first episode was shown last night, and the LOGO site lists the second one for next week. Based on the few episodes which FOX showed, I only rated the series an "interesting failure," but at least it's "interesting." I'll be curious to see the newly aired episodes. 2. Arrested Development marathons on Fridays, starting tonight. 3. This may be exclusive to the L.A. area but, also tonight, FOX is showing some sort of half-hour special about the Beatles' legendary Hollywood Bowl concert. 4. I suspect there will be an "I Love Lucy" rerun shown somewhere in upcoming days. For the first time in history, that person will be rapping. And no, we don't count the "talking cowboy poetry" thing. This is a real rapper - a country rapper, but a rapper nonetheless. His name is Cowboy Troy. Taking the stage with Big & Rich on Sunday night, Troy may be the first artist of his kind, and no, Kid Rock doesn't count, either. Here's a sample of Troy's country rapping: "People said it's impossible, not probable, too radical. But I already been on the CMAs. "Hell, Tim McGraw said he like the change, said he likes the way my hick-hop sounds, and the way the crowd screams when I stomp the ground, I'm big and black, clickety-clack ..." There ya go, sports fans. Sorry to bring race into it, but the success of Big & Rich's new protege is simply an example of how diverse country music has become. There's room for both Cowboy Troy and George Strait, for both Toby Keith and Steve Earle, for both Shania Twain and Lucinda Williams. BVJ producer Larry Werner especially praises Big & Rich for bringing new ideas to country music. He says, "You listen to their music and you look at the credits for songs they're writing for other people, like Gretchen Wilson. These guys have depth. They can write country, they can write roots, they can write rock, rap. They've got it all. They're entertainers, they're songwriters and they're country. They've just got a little edge to them and it's nice to see. It's nice to see there's a variety in the country world. It's more diverse now than it's ever been." While there's a certain amount of "if it ain't broke" mentality to the BVJ this year, as there always is, the lineup reflects this diversity, Werner says. For example, performing on the main stage for the first time this year is Edmonton's Corb Lund, a former heavy metal musician who earned "street cred" in the alternative country scene long before the mainstream picked up on it. Now - like Willie Nelson - he enjoys the best of both worlds. Responding to the usual "where are the superstars?" question, Werner comes back with an answer you might hear from folk fest producer Terry Wickham, which may be telling. "There might be a little more depth through the middle," Werner says, adding that competition for the big names has become fierce. He notes that Travis Tritt - closing the mainstage on Sunday - hasn't been to Canada in 12 years. SheDaisy - on tomorrow - rarely plays over the border. The power of the friendships and industry contacts the Jamboree has developed plays a big part in getting these bookings, Werner says. John Anderson, performing tomorrow in his first BVJ appearance, is another mainstage performer who's is a bit "out there" when it comes to country music. "He can do it all, too," Werner says. "He can play blues as good as he can play country. He's got the depth. I look at these guys and they're not what you might classify as a typical radio--friendly country artist, but they're great artists. They've done it all and they're survivors. They're as good today as they were five years ago. It's just bringing depth to the show. That's what we're looking for." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jul 2005 11:29:00 -0700 (PDT) From: Benjamin Lukoff Subject: Re: A few programming notes On Fri, 29 Jul 2005, Eb wrote: > 1. I've seen them all (on DVD) and I think the show was only a failure insofar as it was cancelled far too soon. I'm glad they're finally being aired and think it's a total shame that's all we'll ever have. Then again, one great season is better than seven lousy ones--who knows what might have happened if it'd gotten picked up. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jul 2005 14:06:32 -0400 From: The Great Quail Subject: Happy birthday, Geddy Lee! How many of those non-mainstream country folks actually get airplay? I think I heard a bit of this "Cowboy Troy" guy in a record store. It sounded like it was on either a compilation or a DVD or something, because it was introduced by some complete moron bellowing in an exaggerated southern accent with a voice like a toilet coming unstuck . It might have been that guy whose catchphrase* is "get 'er done," cuz he kept repeating that. I rarely leave record stores because of the background music (and this was a mainstream-ish one because I was buying some crap for a cousin's birthday) but that one drove me right out the door. It was rather like being strapped facefirst to the asshole of a terminally flatulent cow. - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jul 2005 14:17:36 -0500 From: Jeff Subject: Re: A few programming notes On 7/29/05, Eb wrote: > 1. When the series aired, I liked it pretty well but was uncertain how well it would hold up. But having seen all of the produced episodes on the DVD, I'm completely sold on it. It would have been a really charming series, and the characters definitely grew on me. I think, too, that one of the episodes that did air was actually the weakest, or second weakest, of the series (can't recall which one right now, sorry). - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jul 2005 13:05:40 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: Happy birthday, Geddy Lee!
