Supposedly, Dahl was so ticked off at all the rewriting that he refused to allow a film of "...Great Glass Elevator" to be made. Wow -- I mean, wow. Look, I love Adrian Belew. A lot. But I am not such a rabid fan that I don't realize some of his solo songs are fillers, clunkers, failed experiments, and so on. So I do not consider myself a raving uncritical fanboy, like I am about, say, Brother Bono or Hawkwind. But last night -- wow. He was with a band, a pretty good drummer and a bassist named Mike Gallagher, this piratical looking cat who played his bass more like an electric guitar. Incredible stuff. They played less like Adrian's back-up musicians, and more like a full-fledged band. And the song selection was phenomenal -- Adrian played only his best stuff, all the way from "Big Electric Cat" to "Matchless Man." No clunkers at all. And he busted out five or so King Crimson songs, but really made them fit the new band, which freshened them up quite nicely. The crowd was completely enthusiastic about the entire band, not just Adrian. He seemed very pleased to have such a reaction. I think gigging with Les Claypool may have been a good thing for ol' Ade. My overall feeling was, "Please -- keep this band together and pick a name for yourselves." Anyway, I highly recommend the Genshiken anime, which comes out next Tuesday. It's about college-age otakudom in general, but the best part is the culture clash as regular girl Saki tries to understand her cute otaku boyfriend's various interests. The entire series will be on three discs. - - Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jul 2005 20:57:57 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: News to me >> http://www.nme.co.uk/news/113078.htm > > Remember the old days? Here's a thought -- try watching a film which contains people and a sense of reality. Characters can be interesting even if they DON'T have giant pie-sized eyes, y'know. xxx, Eb ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jul 2005 21:33:26 -0700 (PDT) From: Capuchin Subject: Re: News to me On Thu, 21 Jul 2005, Steve Schiavo wrote: > On Jul 21, 2005, at 4:17 PM, Eb wrote: >> http://www.nme.co.uk/news/113078.htm > > Remember the old days? I almost posted some comment about "Eb Schiavo", but couldn't find any more compelling content than that so didn't. And as for films which "contain people", well, I would quickly note that just about every film is written by one or two people and is necessarily contrived, so there's really no reason to say there's any "sense of reality" in there. Any such sense is just projection on the part of the viewer, so as long as you can project, none is more "real" than any other. But personally, I can't watch most anime. Something about it just grates. Eb ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 11:07:51 -0700 From: Eb Subject: reap Date Posted: Fri, July 22, 2005 9:22:28 VANCOUVER (CP) -- Vancouver-based blues legend Long John Baldry has died after a four-month battle with a chest infection, his agent said Friday on the musician's website. The 64-year-old musical giant was admitted to the intensive-care unit of a Vancouver hospital in April after returning from a trip to his native Britain with respiratory problems. Baldry is credited as one of the main forces in British blues, rock and pop music in the 1960s and first hit the top of the U.K. singles charts in 1967 with Let the Heartaches Begin. He has released over 40 albums. Baldry, nicknamed Long John because of his six-foot-seven-inch height, had been living in Canada for most of the past 25 years. He has performed and recorded with such top rock 'n' rollers as Rod Stewart, Elton John, Charlie Watts and Mick Jagger. The Rolling Stones even opened for Baldry in London during an early performance in the 1960s, before the band became a household name. The British press reported that Stewart considered Baldry a mentor, and was at his bedside when he was first admitted to hospital after he fell ill in March. There were reports Stewart even helped to pay his ailing friend's medical bills. Baldry claimed blues legends like Big Joe Turner, Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry as his earliest musical influences. ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V14 #176 ********************************
