I have heard, over the last 8 months, different Romanians, including several of my friends who have been to English speaking countries, refer to a favorite dish of theirs as "smashed potatoes." Then I noticed it on the English translation part of the menus, especially in the countryside, in every part of the country. I always thought smashed pototoes were mashed potatoes made with the skins left on the potatoes. "I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." -- Mitch Hedberg . Tired of spam? Yahoo! This is gonna be Eddie's new favorite band for sure. Nobody has posted this before, right? http://www.skollersta.nu/www.skollersta.nu/NySida/sid1/aktualiteter/festivalen/deep%20sunshine%201.wmv I can't even describe my feelings for this song when it was a hit in the eighties. This seems like the perfect tribute. See if you can make it all the way through. The lead vocal and the "Steve Winwood animal control violation memorial horn patch" really make this work. I have to believe that John Cage should have stayed alive to hear this. Happies, - -Markg ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jul 2005 01:34:45 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Random capsule review I saw a new documentary called "Punk: Attitude" on the Independent Film Channel tonight. The title is pretty much self-explanatory. But explain this: How could this hour-and-a-half documentary touch on bands as obscure as Agnostic Front, DNA, Teenage Jesus, the Screamers, X Ray Spex, John Cooper Clarke, Theoretical Girls (whom I hadn't even heard of before this year!), the Slits and the Weirdos, not have even a PASSING mention of X! NOT ONE MENTION. WTF??? And only the briefest namecheck of Gang of Four. No mention of the Modern Lovers either, and the film seemed to go a bit overboard in setting up VU, the Stooges, NY Dolls and the MC5 as the elite Holy Court of Punk Godfathers. I found the film uneven and unsatisfying. It was strong about explaining the roots of punk, and the early London/New York scenes. But beyond that, it kinda dropped the ball. Near the end, they (inevitably?) skipped ahead for the strained grunge tie-in, and the narrative mentions how there's an incorrect feeling like the preceding '80s were just a blank page for punk. And that it's only a case of that era's punk being weakly documented. OK, so why didn't THIS project document it either? Phooey. No coverage of SST beyond Black Flag and Sonic Youth, nothing on Epitaph beyond Rancid (not even the Offspring or Bad Religion), no Touch & Go, only a bit of Dischord, blahblahblah. I don't believe Stiff Records was ever mentioned by name, either. Worth seeing, though. Even if there's not really any single clip which makes me say, oh, you gotta see THIS. There's a clip of the young Patti Smith singing "Horses" on the Grey Whistle Test which would have been amazing, but they only show it for about 15 seconds. I remember "learning" one or two, specific things from the documentary, but darned if I can remember what they were now. Maybe it had something to do with lots of people looking up to the Screamers, whom I don't know a goddamn thing about.... Oh, I recall one of them now: For some reason, I had thought X Ray Spex was from San Francisco rather than the UK. Ouch.
