Well, over here in the UK we got the whole thing (and much of the other gigs as well), but the things that particularly struck me about the Floyd set were the grin on Waters' face for most of the gig (I'm not sure if it was an 'I've finally got back in you bastards' grin or a 'Spot the reunion tour coming up' grin), and his interrupting the start of Wish You Were Here with the words 'This is for everyone who can't be here tonight ... but especially Syd'. I understand what you're getting at (I think) - but "desert island" is a calcified and specific usage, even if "desert" as adjective is rather archaic in this sense - and "deserted" isn't really the sense anyone. I'd say "isolated island" but that would be redundant more or less. (trolling now) And it's "box set" and "mix tape" not "boxed" or "mixed." Bitch! Pick up the phone, BITCH! Bitch? O Bitch! Bitch! Pick up the phone, bitch. picked up *Picaresque* from the library. totally dig the "credits" (and is the thank-you to paul montagne the first-ever liner-note-thank-you to a feg?), but the pictures are exceedingly dumb. as far as the music is concerned, i should think that the first three songs are the best first-three-album-songs in recent memory. maybe since *Document*? alas, after that, it's rather hit-and-miss. maybe it'll grow on me. or maybe, much like *Her Majesty*, i'll forever love the ever-lovin' jizz out of about half the songs, while the other half will always put me sound to sleep. i mean, the decemberists have got to be the all time standard-deviation champs: exactly half their songs are, like, absolutely as perfect as music can get; while exactly half are absolutely dismal rubbish. downloaded the forthcoming new pornographers album (don't worry, i'll check it out from the library once it's available, and rip me a legitimate copy). it's good, but, nowhere near so delectable as the previous two. on the other hand, having forgotten how much i enjoyed the previous gomez album, i was blown fairly far away upon just recently getting 'round to listening to a boot i'd downloaded many months ago. screw the thrills, i say: gomez are the heir apparent. finally got around to downloading the *Revenge Of The Sith* screener (no way, now how, will i ever pay to see another george lucas movie again). was kinda looking forward to seeing it, given the favorable reviews. and, as with the previous two...this is just unbelievably shit. this was supposed to be "dark" and "dramatic" and "political" and "satisfying"? who pays these fucking film critics? the acting is sooooooo bad. i had thought that, on evidence of *Shattered Glass*, christensen would have improved greatly since episode two. turns out instead that he seemed so effective playing a weasel in *Shattered Glass* because either that's the only thing he can do, or because he's not even acting. but darth vader, whatever he ought to have been, ought not to have been a weasel. thankfully, natalie portman -- the most annoying actress this side of joan cusack -- wasn't given much to do. but even *that* she did horribly. and ewan mcgregor, who was according to at least one critic, supposed to have been "channeling" alec guiness, was worst of all. sam jackson wasn't too bad, i guess. the visuals have *still* not progressed beyond *Jurassic-Park*-style clay-mation when it comes to trying to make large CGI characters move around. if you ever wanna know how badly the "state of the art" in visual prestidigitation has regressed, just compare the fuckwrog (or whatever the hell obi wan's steed was called) with the banthas from *New Hope* or the walkers from *Empire*. the dialogue is cringe-inducing -- but at least the critics have acknowledged that much. as for the screenplay, you can't even judge it one way or the other, because there is nothing there. it's all swordfights and martial arts and laser guns and whatever. (hilariously so, too: the motherfuckers spend twenty minutes locking swords, and *then* out come the lightning bolts. uh, dude, why didn't you lightning-bolt the sumbitch to *begin with*? or, do you like how general grievous makes a big show about wanting to take obi wan on man-to-man, and then pulls out *four* light-sabers? uhhhhhhhhhh, okay. and *then* he makes a big show out of performing that helicopter maneuver with his swords, but doesn't even incorporate it into the battle. uhhhhhhhhhh, okay.) but since there is almost no screen time spent advancing the plot or developing the characters, you can't really say that the screenplay "sucks", or something. it's not even, really, a movie: it's an after-school cartoon show. as far as the "political" content, it's all of two or three lines that were repeated over and over in the press. lucas claims that he conceived of the story during the nixon administration, and it just so happens that it applies as well as to to-day's landscape -- which is plausible enough if you've not seen the movie. but to anybody that *has* seen the movie (which, presumably, would include the reporters he was lecturing), it's more than a little obvious that he merely interjected a few banal opinions into the proceedings in order to comment upon king dubya. in fact, the dearth of these sorts of ideas even in the first trilogy (eps. 4 - 6) is pretty striking, when you think about it. what is the "rebellion" rebelling against? the empire. why? because it's "evil". okay...*that's* compelling. do the rebels ever discuss tactics (specifically, violence versus nonviolence)? not to our knowledge. how are the rebels funded? doesn't matter. how does the act of blowing up the second death star equate to having overthrown a galactic empire? nobody cares. but at least, as noted, there's plenty of unintentional hilarity (unlike the first two episodes, which were agonizingly boring). my fave laugh-out-loud moment is right at the very end, when obi wan delivers the baby to beru...and beru *smiles*! what the fuck did obi wan say to her to make her smile? "uh, hi. your husband's half-brother went over to the dark side and helped overthrow the galactic republic, which is now the galactic empire. (the jedi were too pansy-assed to do anything about it, so we basically just called it a day.) he slaughtered a big mess of "younglings" -- we caught the whole thing on tape, if you wanna see it; and then killed his pregnant bride (but their twin children survived). last i saw of him, he'd fallen into a molten river, and was being burnt to a crisp...that's how i left him. so i guess it's up to you to raise young luke, here. uh, bye." the thing that i can't figure out is how lucas can be such an eloquent critic of the studios, and have such good taste in *other people's* movies (for example having blatantly ripped off a shot from *Lawrence Of Arabia* in episode two and, of course, having helped finance *Kagemusha*), but be completely blind to the braindead nature of his own output. here endeth the reviews. uh, oh yeah. better give you my newest pet-peeve: newspaper style-guides that dictate only the first letter of an acronym be capitalised. was this your idea, stewart? and is it new, or is it just that with the now-easy access to so many newspapers, online, that one is ineluctably exposed to many more style variations than one had previously been? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Jul 2005 22:40:24 -0500 From: Dolph Chaney Subject: Re: Poll At 09:36 PM 7/6/2005, Eb wrote: >>...In case you are, he's doing fine, and his band's demos are >>sounding fan-fucking-tastic. > >Are they 1986errific?
