Why "8"? (other than being a number that puns on "aid") The "8" refers to the G8 (group of eight - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States) Summit being held July 6-8 in Ireland. The concert is an attempt to promote awareness and call on the leaders of the 8 wealthiest and most powerful countries to make poverty history. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Jul 2005 10:14:03 -0400 From: "Stewart C. Erm, is the US press so badly informed that they haven't got around to telling anyone that Gleneagles is in Scotland? Aaaaargh! LJ and I tuned in just to watch that (and the U2, for me) and we were simply aghast. If I ever needed any more proof that MTV is run by soulless wonks in grey suits who have no passion for music whatsoever, that was it. It was so flagrantly awful -- and then adding to that, the narcissistic, savagely banal, self-consuming patter of the VJ-bots -- Aaaaaaargh! Oh, and the summit is in Scotland, not Ireland. I mean, there's a bit of a difference -- they still wear kilts in Scotland, and drink worse beer. - --Quail ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Jul 2005 18:52:57 +0000 From: 2and2makes5@comcast.net Subject: Re: MTV & Live 8 > Am I the only one who thinks that MTV's coverage of Live 8 could not have > been worse? Being lectured by cliche-spouting VJs in designer clothes who, for the few minutes I tried to watch, kept saying the same thing over and over while the music played on ignored in the background--why, its enough to make one write run-on sentences and dangle prepositions! And then there were the ads. The experience certainly didn't do anything to diminish my cynicism--maybe it worked for the "Candle in the Wind" crowd. Nah, I think you'll find every Scottish stout kicks Guinness's arse from here to next Wednesday. If you're drinking Guinness outside Ireland, you're probably drinking some local cheap beer + Guinness concentrate. It's how they do it, I'm afraid ...
