Starbucks to release CD of Dylan bootlegs June 28, 2005 | Seattle -- Bob Dylan made his mark playing in one cafe. Soon, he'll be in thousands. Starbucks Coffee Co. has reached a deal to produce and exclusively release a CD of 10 Dylan recordings from New York's Gaslight Cafe in 1962, when he was just finding himself as a songwriter. The Gaslight, in Greenwich Village, was a focal point of the folk revival in the early '60s. "Bob Dylan: Live at the Gaslight 1962" will be available at Starbucks stores in the United States and Canada on Aug. 30. It includes the earliest known recordings of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," as well as folk standards "Barbara Allen" and "The Cuckoo." Fans have circulated bootlegs of Dylan's Gaslight performances over the years, but these are the first to be professionally produced and remastered, Starbucks said Tuesday. The CD's release will coincide with the release of director Martin Scorsese's feature-length film about Dylan, "No Direction Home." Starbucks will also sell the two-CD soundtrack for the movie, though the soundtrack will be available through other stores. Guess I'll have to steal from Starbucks then. I think I have enough old unused Starbuck's gift cards laying around so I won't have to do that, but... If you are going to do something like this, better Starbucks than anywhere else since it's not like there is a town or city left on in the US or Canada without 2-3 Starbucks, whereas if he'd done it through BestBuy or even the ever popular "group of select independent record stores," you are bound to leave holes in the country where someone couldn't get it. > Uncle Bobby should bring around some of them there > Victoria's Secret models, though. "The retrospective opened with Hummer's 'Happy Jack,' one of the songs from The Who's '60s mod period,"Degroot said. "Then a Saab commercial played 'I'm Free' from their ambitious rock-opera phase, followed by a promo for CSI featuring 'Who Are You,' one of their last great hits." In light of the popular commercials, the surviving Who members are planning a reunion tour to perform 30-second snippets from all their famous songs. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 16:26:17 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: Half-year rock-n-pop favorites...? WTF? An interesting point...isn't it amazing the way ticket inflation has hit marginal name acts as well as the big draws? Pat Benatar is getting $39.50++, Hall & Oates $55 and $65++, etc. A rising tide lifts all ships, I guess. Ticketbastard seems to have become even more aggressive this year, or I'm imagining things. The aforementioned Benatar show - and I'm not saying I'm going, mind you - has another $15 in fees tacked on, and that's the thin end of the wedge. Were I interested in seeing the 22-20's here at a smallish venue, I would have to pay $7.55 in fees on top of the $10 ticket...a 75% premium. They also only show half the fees upfront and only add the other half at the last checkout page...plus they've stopped offering free mail delivery on some tickets (and charge you $2.50 to print them out!). Ye gods. OTOH I'll be seeing Adrian Belew this Friday for $7 plus all the ribs my sauce-covered, gout-riddled fingers can shove faceward. Things are definitely looking up. I've noticed that apparently, if your band had even one hit in the eighties (hello Quarterflash), you're still able to play places like casinos at fairly high ticket prices. Probably those folks make more than all but a handful of currently viable acts. Sad. (And if you're Hall and Oates - who had oodles of hits - you're probably getting nearly as many people now as you did then. I hate to say it, but people my age (43) typically just utterly retard their musical tastes at college, and then, twenty years later when they can finally afford to do so, go and pay big bucks to see all the acts they loved back then. It's embarrasking I tells ya.) - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Jun 2005 06:36:44 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: This may expire shortly, but....
