I think that it was the prospect of a fourth song from Roy Harper that did it. I *like* Roy Harper. I have all the rubbish :^) he's ever done, and then some. And his performance of Black Clouds (from Sophisticated Beggar) was amazing. But he dragged out Girl from the North Country for two minutes more than he should have. And Bad Speech, even perfectly delivered, should segue into Hope, preferably with Jimmy Page on guitar, for if not, the battle between credibility and cringe-inducing cliche can go the wrong way. The other slowboat was Robin Williamson, talented harpist, but right up there with Daevid Allen when it comes to lyrics that are almost, but not quite, beyond parody. Didn't John Peel always used to say that he never listened to the Incredible String Band in the car, as he'd had a dream in which he was dying in a crash with one of their tapes playing on the stereo? The other thought that came to me was that he may have chosen the harp because there's less chance of having it shoved up his ass when the audience finally loses their collective patience. But the rest was incredible. Robyn was the best (amazing vocals, perfect guitar sound) but there was so much else to see: - Martin Stephenson: damn, if I'd known he was so good, so funny, so talented, I'd have gone to see him years ago - Neil Finn: Wild Mountain Thyme was a brave and wondrous effort, even if I kept expecting "purple heather" (or "walking round the room singing stormy weather") - Beth Orton: (oh my goodness) that voice, when it kicks in, everything else fades for a moment - Bert Jansch: exactly what it says on the tin, only more fun that you would ever have thought - Johnny Marr: I never knew that he could sing, so well, and "please please please let me get what I want this time", perfect - Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye: because they are Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye, of course. Jesus, it's Patti Smith. Not her most together performance, but it was supposed to be her night off. - Spider Stacey: gosh, that took me back. Good stuff. And it was the warmest I've ever been in a theatre, and we were in Row E, front stalls. Christ alone knows what it was like further up. More details on the finale, please. x Jim ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jun 2005 16:35:05 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: reap Chet Helms "I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." -- Mitch Hedberg .
