Right after I sent this, someone else (either Fark or MetaFilter) hit it more precisely: too bad his cellmate won't be Adebisi on _Oz._ "I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." -- Mitch Hedberg . __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? So much for not sinking to the criminals' level.. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jun 2005 10:39:24 +0100 From: "Charlotte Tupman" Subject: Meltdown Folk Connections show last night What a treat it was. Others are bound to have more informed opinions than me of the other artists that performed, so I shall write only about Robyn's appearance. I'm on the digest version of the list, so if all this info has already appeared, well, you can enjoy it all over again! By the end of the first half I was convinced that Robyn wasn't coming on. We'd already had Bert Jansch and Johnny Marr, and I traitorously considered that they were likely to be higher up the bill than Robyn. BUT some way into the second half the blue Tele appeared and all was well :-) He played four numbers, as follows (all on the Tele): 1. I Pity The Poor Immigrant (Dylan) 2. The Speed Of Things 3. Polly On The Shore (Martin Carthy) 4. [another song by Martin Carthy - anyone know what it was called?] He was joined for all four numbers by John Paul Jones, who played mandolin for the first two songs and mandolincello for the last two, and also by Lenny Kaye for the last number. JPJ was fantastic on both instruments: he somehow replaced the usual twanginess of a mandolin by a beautifully round sound that made a perfect accompaniment. Ok, JPJ-worship over. Robyn's voice was in really good shape and he was clearly really enoying himself. For those who follow such things, hair: grown a bit; shirt: extremely flowery; trousers: blue velvet. Hair-tossing and blinking were surprisingly infrequent, though Robyn's own version of the Shadows step-dance was very much in evidence throughout. He did come on again for the finale (again, I'm afraid I don't know the song) but stood towards the back blending in with everyone else, and you couldn't really pick out his guitar sound from the others. The rest of the show (4 hours!!) was a real mix of styles - I'm sure lots of reviews will appear on the net. I will just say that Roy Harper was incredible, and that it was a night of music that I shall remember for a long time to come.
