"bin Laden" is another example, btw. http://www.answers.com/topic/patronymic Hope you're liking the gmail... Now, is there a snazzy name for when you have the same FIRST name as your father? (Like me) And my contribution to the politics thread: http://www.glasshotel.net/video/countdown_on_voting_irregs.wmv It's about what happened last election. Interesting and possibly thought provoking, at least. A lurker-feg was wondering if anyone had the "Robyn Rarities" cd's marc made a year or two ago, and would be willing to make a copy? I bet he'd trade you something... =b ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Jun 2005 13:51:19 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: snazzy > "Is there any snazzy word for last names like McCartney, McCarty, > MacColl, etc.?" > > "bin Laden" is another example, btw. > > http://www.answers.com/topic/patronymic Thanks to Bayard (and Jason) for answering my question. I just KNEW there had to be a snazzy word for it. ;) Eb ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jun 2005 11:52:28 +1200 From: James Dignan Subject: Re: MacRoky >Is there any snazzy word for last names like McCartney, McCarty, >MacColl, etc.? Or a specific word for the name's "prefix"? Well, you could call them patronymics, but then you'd have to include names like O'Brien/O'Shaughnessy, Robertson/Nilsson, Pavlevich/Ilyich, Upjohn/Powell, and the like. "Celtic patronymic" would at least cut it down to Mc/Mac-, O'- and Up/Ap/P-. >Is it pronounced "Roe-key," like "vs. Wade" and an >instrument for opening a lock, or "Rocky," a la flying >squirrel? "Rocky". It's a shortened version of his first and middle names--Roger Kynard. I'd been told "Roe-key" at one point years and years ago, but I decided after hearing a live recording of "Before in the Beginning"* (The Necronomicon Song) where both the announcer and Roky say "Rocky" Erickson, that the "Roe-key" pronunciation was wrong. His brother Sumner called him "Rocky" when I was talking to him, so that works for me. It is currently 305.388888888889 degrees K in my house. Glad that my beer is probably only about 275 K (the mug was in the freezer). Marc (which is short for "Marc") btw--backwards, it's craM *The recent Ryko/Restless CD re-issue of "Gremlins Have Pictures" says: NOTE: "The Necronomicon Song" was called "Before In The Beginning" IN ERROR. I think the mistake a lot of us make is thinking the state-appointed psychiatrist is our "friend."
