I actually think Dave Matthews Band comparisons are more appropriate for Coldplay -- same pretense, same quasi-falsetto vocals meant to convey how much the singer feels what he's singing man, same boring yuppie fans, same vague disaffection (mostly about having to go to an off-brand coffee house because the Starbuck's is closed). Radiohead heard U2, Pixies, etc and wanted to know what records they had been listening to -- Coldplay obviously want to be U2 (though they probably wouldn't know Television from a hole in the ground), but probably decided that the Pixies were just too weird and were creeped out by Black Francis's lyrics. I've known about it for a few of weeks now, but it's great to see it officially announced. http://www.aclfestival.com/festival/ I had been trying to get some information about some reissues, etc. about a month ago, from the Roky website < http://www.rokyerickson.net >, and wasn't having much luck at first, when I called what I thought was a management company number and wound up talking to his brother. He was really a nice guy and wound up mentioning that Roky was doing well enough to consider playing out for the first time in a while (he did a small show earlier this year, but this is by far the highest profile event in a long time). I'm really really looking forward to this one. I just bought my ticket and will just need to decide whether to fly or drive out. Anyone who wants to meet up for this one can feel free to contact me directly (marc.h@cox.net). No word yet whether to expect any sets from Robyn Hitchcock at the festival (just wishful thinking here, I'm sure), but I'm keeping my fingers crossed, as he said he planned to play Tucson in September, so there might be more live activity at that time... Later, Marc btw--Don't forget to visit Roky's site < http://www.rokyerickson.net > and maybe even donate a few bucks--especially if you have any bootleg Roky stuff or bought his music used. Just a thought, okay? To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And, at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between, plus some things I can't remember, all rolled into one big "thing." This is truth, to me. It might be a good way of foisting off some Hitchcock tunes an unsuspecting stranger... >> Swapshop for iGeeks << Fancy listening to some new music this summer? Join in Taz's plan and send a random web person a CD of your favourite tunes, as hopefully they'll do the same. http://www.funjunkie.co.uk/the_summer_burn.cfm Have fun, with the approaching summer heat (except for you James). I just found out that my air conditioner is broken again. It was 92 F in the house when I got home last night at 1 a.m. (not really a big deal, but it was 10 degrees cooler outside, so it felt swltering when I first got in), and it hasn't really even started getting that hot yet. I should probably get it looked at before things really heat up. One summer it hit 123 F here, and the AC broke during a week of record breaking temperatures. It was at least 107 F inside my house, based on the thermometer on my fish tank. I say at least, because that was the maximum temperture it could show.
