(not a very good metaphor on my part -- "painted themselves into a corner" would probably have been better). and it sounds as though the filmmakers have now really moved on, more's the pity. i was not aware that the stephen king version had been given a proper ending (hadn't even crossed my mind to consider it). i will screen that version at some point in time. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 May 2005 18:02:01 -0400 From: "Stewart C. I caught in Cleveland last Wednesday thanks to Christopher Hintz. They put on an incredible show! Did Colin have the entire audience lower to stooping position in the encore? Their harmonies were dead on. The show was inspiring. - -Nuppy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 May 2005 17:43:14 -0700 From: "Revolutionary Army of the Baby Jesus" Subject: Speaking of Lars... ...the following is of more than passing interest: . ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 10:13:38 -0400 From: "Stewart C. The floor was rather nasty beer-and-gum sticky, so we did it with trepidation. Stewart ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 10:11:22 -0400 From: The Great Quail Subject: Wheeee! Saw U2 at Madison Square Garden Saturday night. Yet again, an amazing show, with several wonderful surprises -- including a "Cry/Electric Co./An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart" medley, and flogging away at Bowie's Jean Genie as an encore. (Bowie was in the audience, as were Patti Smith, Kofi Annan, Phil Ramone, and other assorted celebrities, none of whom I laid eyes upon, my eyes being located in the 300 section.) (though I think Nicole Kidman waved at me.) I realize that U2 is much maligned here, but I have faith that one day the scales will fall from every Feg's eyes, and they will be ready to hear the Word of Brother Bono. But until then, a report from the Revival Tent -- "Vertigo" kicked some holy ass. I also saw "Revenge of the Sith" on Friday, and -- It did not suck. (And after the last two films, that's saying a lot.) In fact, I'd even go so far as to say it was pretty good. I mean, Lucas may never learn how to write convincing dialogue, and Natalie Portman may never learn how to act, and there's all kinds of nitpicks I could make: but the image of a young, fiery Darth Vader as a fallen Romantic hero was surprisingly powerful; and Ewan McGregor steals the show. - --Ken "Bring on the pop culture!" The problem there is that Amidala is just a horribly conceived character who behaves in this movie in a way that is completely antithetical to how she was presented in the first one -- no actress ever could have sold that shit. Plus, having her change her hair every damn scene she's in is beyond distracting. > and there's all kinds of nitpicks I could > make: but the image of a young, fiery Darth Vader as a > fallen Romantic hero was surprisingly powerful; and Ewan > McGregor steals the show. I thought Hayden Christiansen was surprisingly good, but Ian McDiarmid may laughably awful. If his seduction technique of Annikin to the dark side had been any less subtle, his cock would have been hanging out of his robe. Ray Charles would have seen that crap coming from miles away, and he's both blind AND dead! The action sequences were really terrific though, McGregor was shatteringly good. SPOILER re: Natalie Portman The problem with her performance is that the Amidala were given in Phantom Menace -- a strong, confident girl-queen - --is reduced to being a simpering mess with less backbone than bowl of mis-set jello. The Amidala from Episode 1 wouldn't have just stood there blubbering that Annikin had broken her heart -- she'd've fucking shot him (or at least tried)! Lucas should have had her die in childbirth from injuries suffered at Annikin's hand, not of a broken heart over his betrayal. In I perhaps, but in II there were definite attempts - clumsy as they were - to show her softening towards Anakin. I was impressed in "Sith" the way Lucas drew a very specific parallel between Padme and Anakin: they are both being subsumed by their emotions, but one is towards the other while the other is towards something else. It follows a pretty strict, and classical, line until they meet their respective ends in rather barren and sterile circumstances. Admittedly the dialogue was awful, but Carrie Fisher's wasn't much better...and I think she pulled off the conflicted-softening act a lot better. Natalie just isn't very good. And if you've never been around a pregnant woman for an extended period of time, let me tell you the emotional gamut is expansive; a "simpering mess" is not only believable, but expected. I was less put off by the character development than Nat's inability to deliver it. C'est la vie...she's still cute. My read is that if anyone in the movie has a claim to being railroaded by the material, its McDiarmid. He has to play way over the top because Lucas doesn't have Anakin coming /to/ the Dark side as much as being pulled over. But I certainly agree that Hayden was good in the role that was given him. Very good. I know the twist of Luke finding out about Leia in VI had been written into the story, but can you imagine if that whole relationship had been left out? And instead have it only revealed in the birthing room at the very end of "Sith," some 22 years later? Obi-Wan (Standing over Padme): "and the second is...a baby girl." Padme (extreme closeup of lips): "...(gasp)...Leia." Granted, it might not have been "Rosebud" but I think it still would have been a hell of a "gotcha."
