Sorta jazzy, in a way, but not in any way related to fusion. Both albums are best taken as a whole, although they are made up of many shorter songs and instrumental bits. With ace guitar playing by Phil Miller and keyboards by my favorite Dave Stewart. National Health is the follow on band to Hatfield, and sort of the math rock version of the former, with a lot less vocals, and Stewart is joined by Alan Gowen on keyboards. I got the DAT from the original taper a few years back, but this is the first time I transferred it to disc. I don't know if the taper ever gave me the specs on the recording equipment, but I think it was probably Core Sound binaural mics and a Sony M1. The audience at Largo is always well-behaved, and this recording is a pleasure to listen to. All I did was add fades, split tracks and convert to WAV files. Hope you enjoy it. West Hollywood, CA 4/3/99 Size: 281.63 MB Category: Brit Pop Uploaded by: gomonkeygo Description - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trying to atone for my major screwup yesterday on the Robyn at WNYU show that was actually an inadvertent re-seed of the SXSW show from 3/16/05, I present a really nice Robyn show of cover materials. Here's what I have: Robyn Hitchcock with Jon Brion, Grant Lee Phillips, etc Sat., 3 Apr. 1999 Largo, West Hollywood, California US Set 2 Visions of Johanna (Bob Dylan) I've Got a Feeling (The Beatles) One After 909 (The Beatles) Don't Let Me Down (The Beatles) Wipe Out (Surfaris) Country Rose (actually Country Roads?) She Said She Said (The Beatles) Arnold Layne (Syd Barrett) Sound & Vision (David Bowie) All You Need Is Love (The Beatles) Soul Kitchen (Doors) / White Christmas (Berlin/Hitchcock) improv. There is a first set that I don't have; think it was original material. Here's info from the RH Gigography: After a couple of songs, Neil protested that he wasn't really qualified on drums. The others responded with some laudatory words, and launched into Wipeout. Heh. Neil was fine back there, at least until "All You Need Is Love," which turned out to be a tad more complicated than he'd realized. Still, another memorable night at Largo. Viva Sea-Tac had a different ending this time, which sounded like a lot of ad-libbing. Devil Mask was a shocker, as was Sleeping Knights. When Robyn, Grant, and Jon get going on their rock songs, it's really something special; I wish they did more of Robyn's tunes like that than just the few that concluded the first set. One more thing: Robyn looked pretty worn out most of the night, and seemed to drink a lot. It looked like he had an awful lot of wine on stage (for that matter, I counted four Guinnesses consumed by Jon while performing). After the show, some Fegs waited around for a chance to talk to him or get autographs, and were told he wouldn't be coming out; he was too exhausted. In any case, it was good to see a bunch of LA Fegs, Julie, Peter, Marc, kototh, as well as the ubiquitous pseudo-Feg Dan Poppe. And many thanks to non-Feg (but give him time) John Martin for providing me a patch of floor. 'til next time, - - Chris ____________________ Great sound, I think. Just trying to get into the same ballpark, or maybe the same town. I'm pretty sure it's not too far a stretch to think that people who like Wyatt would have some predisposition to like Ayers, although the early Ayers albums are more "fun" than Wyatt. All in the same Canterbury stewpot. Takako's music is fun and sticky-sweet. I like it in short, powerful doses. She's very cutesy-Japanese, and often sings about cats and colors. I also have the "Cloudy Cloud Calculatur" CD, which is a hoot. I don't see here as a shoegazer so much as an originator of the current 1980s techno-pop revival: lots of early synths and covers of Kraftwerk and such. Once your brain has been infected with her song "Fantastic Cat" you will carry it forever. Takako trivia: she's married to Cornelius and was the voice behind "Playstation" for Sony. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Apr 2005 09:20:12 -0500 From: "Gene Hopstetter, Jr." Subject: Re: Dungen, Elope, Culpeper's Orchard > From: The Great Quail > Subject: Re: Eb's Amazon recs (was Re: Scooter Lou) > >>> Dungen > > Good! I'd love to see some of my favorites end up in car commercials. Most of the bands I listen to aren't exactly flowing in the cash. I figure the added exposure and the added money can only prolong their existence... allow them to keep doing what they like to do. I don't really see a difference in licensing music to movies or commercials. After all, they both are profit-making ventures... they both are selling products... Movies are mini-corporations, out to make big bucks, and let's face it, Robyn has had a whole movie done about him... a profit-making venture... I applaud the added exposure, and the chance to make a buck. And as a writer of music, and an editor/director of TV commercials, I would freakin LOVE to get one of my tunes on TV. For me, the exposure would be grand.
