They thought "I will drug you, and fuck you..." was just the coolest line ever. Heck, maybe it is. ;) So, my introduction was also through Secondhand Daylight. Though, oddly, I ended up buying three other Magazine records before I finally grabbed that one. During recent weeknights, I've been playing around a lot with Amazon's recommendations/wish-list function for the first time. I approached it with plenty of cynicism, but the site actually has done a fine job of pointing me at some desirable bands to check out. At this point, I think my most solid bets are Faust, Mum, Death Cab for Cutie, Matching Mole, M83, Imitation Electric Piano and Bloc Party. Even if I was already curious about all of those beforehand, except Imitation Electric Piano (who seem to be a "Well, if you like Stereolab..."-type band). On the other side of the coin, I believe I can now safely say that I will never enjoy Caravan. Hrm. I'd seen anime before ("Akira" comes to mind), but "Spirited Away" was the movie which hit my subconscious. Some of it startlingly so - the scenes on the train crossing the water at night, with the ghostly figures in the carriage in particular opened up doors in my brain that few movie scenes have ever done. I was going to hold off from saying anything until Brian posted the above note. I doubt any of this qualifies as "exciting", but I do have a strong enthusiasm for the Rats. I have raved about them to Brian and stand by these rants. I guess I must still be pretty interested in them after all this time because the last post I sent out last night was "Re: Boomtown Rats re-issue CDs"--the entire catalogue was recently re-issued in the UK. Kimber at Stinkweeds has had them on hold for me for a couple of weeks. I only just got back from vacation, so I haven't had a chance to listen to the CD's. Still waiting for the Mondo Bongo CD to come in. For a few years (approx. 1983-86), I played at least one of their albums every day. If you listen to any of the mix tapes* I made back then, they show up on most of them (lots of Bowie, Costello, the Ramones, the Cars, '60's British Invasion bands, Crack the Sky, and the Slickee Boys). I don't think they toured the US at al, after I started listening to them, so the only time I saw them was at Live Aid. My favorite albums were: The Boomtown Rats, A Tonic For the Troops, and In the Long Grass. Check out these songs: Rat Trap, Looking After Number 1, Drag Me Down, Up All Night, She's So Modern, Someone's Looking at You, Kicks, etc. (the AMG link below has some song samples). Probably my favorite is (I Never Loved) Eva Braun from A Tonic For the Troops. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE47817DA46A57320C9932D4787BC53F106C60DF48B0A3C6858D7AF217BAF0F6AB513A7DBD2B3FA75B135ACF52FA2500ED1DA9F2B&searchlink=BOOMTOWN|RATS&uid=CAW020504220306&samples=1&sql=11:0ev1z82ajyv2~T31 For advanced listeners--Find both the British and US LP versions of In The Long Grass and note the differences in the recordings. Different masters were used. For example the UK version of the album has a song called "Dave", which was put out as a single. In the US, the song is called "Rain" and has a different set of lyrics. I don't think the US version has appeared on CD anywhere, ever. I'd have a tough time describing their sound, but they'd fit well on a mix tape* with Springsteen, Oingo Boingo, the Police, and the Ramones. They're my favorite Irish band. Chatter at you later, Marc *btw--That reminds me, I've been meaning to pull out a few of the older mix tapes just to see where my head was back then. Does anyone else ever do that? I wonder how many songs I'll have to cringe through at this point. "Shut up! Shut up, you American. You always talk, you Americans. You talk and you talk and say 'let me tell you something' and 'I just wanna say this'. Well, you're dead now, so shut up!"--Mr. Death (the Grim Reaper), Monty Python's Meaning of Life. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Apr 2005 11:27:37 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: Oh, one other thing On Apr 21, 2005, at 9:44 PM, Eb wrote: > This may be a "regional" commercial which many won't have seen, but is > anyone else utterly baffled by the score for the new Vons supermarket > commercials, which seems to blatantly pilfer Lou Reed's "Street > Hassle" riff without comment? But there's a big difference between licensing an original song where everyone hears it and instantly recognizes it, and doing a mainstream instrumental arrangement of a snippet of an underground song...then mixing it so low into the commercial that most people won't even consciously perceive it. I betcha Lou Reed doesn't even know about this. And perhaps there are enough subtle little differences in the two riffs that he doesn't even have grounds for a lawsuit.
