QuickTime required. - - Steve __________ I also like the Dogs Die In Hot Cars record. It's a really divisive one - you either love them or loathe them. But I think they've got a lot of good songs. They're kind of later XTC, where we're earlier XTC. Maybe we should do a show together. We open, they close and we kind of do XTC's whole back catalogue. - Ross Millard, Futureheads ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Apr 2005 19:33:50 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: Look, it's Robin Zander! You know, not that it matters to anyone here but I resisted anime for as long as I possibly could. I'm not particularly interested in animation, and the bits of anime I'd seen didn't seem at all appealing. But eventually I had an opportunity to download Spirited Away and I did so, in no small part because of the incessant promotion of Miyazaki by one or more of the Steves on the feg list. I loved it, still love it, and I've become a Miyazaki fan in spite of myself. YMMV, and probably already does, but this is one of those rare cases where my tastes have been informed by some stranger on a list. In the past six or seven years, I believe the only older acts I've really been "turned onto" are Burt Bacharach, Tortoise (if they're old enough to count) and Margo Guryan (who's so totally marginal that I'm sure I'll get rid of her discs someday). However, I think I'm due to discover Faust -- all the Real Audio clips and things I've sampled sound pretty darn good. Anyone have anything exciting to say about the Boomtown Rats? Probably not, but have you ever actually listened to The Fine Art of Surfacing? The album got swallowed up in the hit (I Don't Like Mondays) but that song is surrounded by some pretty weird and ambitious Irish pop. I've returned to it a few times over the years and I'm always surprised. Eccentric melodies and arrangements that I suppose are dated, but they don't really fit any "new wave" mold that I can see. Tonic For The Troops is ok, but much more familiar pub-rock territory, IMO. Unless you meant that question ironically, in which case, heh heh heh... In a similar vein, have you heard any Skids? This was where Stuart Adamson honed his guitar sound before forming Big Country. If that sounds awful to you then it probably is, but I value it insofar as it's not at all what I was listening to at the time, and some of the songs are pretty good. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Apr 2005 09:53:38 +0100 From: "Marc Hewson" Subject: RE: Krautrock I've missed > Anyone have anything exciting to say about the Boomtown Rats? I saw them live on the Tonic For The Troops tour (at the New Theatre/Apollo, Matt!) and they put on an incredibly energetic show, the material from the debut LP working particularly well, but somehow they never really captured that enrgy on their records. Looking After Number One is still a great track though. Unless you meant that question ironically, in which case, heh heh heh... In a similar vein, have you heard any Skids? The Skids appeared on Top of the Pops doing Into The Valley and the next day at school everyone was doing Richard Jobson's silly dance, kicking the legs up horizontally in turn whilst waving the arms around like windmills! That debut single still sounds like the best thing they did, before descending into pretention and outright bollocks (remeber Jobson dressed as a country squire? Dear, oh dear!). Big Country were quite promising when they started but then everything sounded the same due to that guitar sound, although being Scots, I gave them more chance then most! Costs about 40 quid (is that about 80 or so of your American bucks?) and still stands as the best and best-value musical purchase I've ever made. If you really don't want to fork out, start with The Faust Tapes, So Far and Faust. And Faust IV. I think Faust are, when all is said and done, my favourite band... ever! Woj, what did I do wrong? Cheers... So the gig on Thursday went about as well as it could have done I was rather worried that, like most The New Moon gigs (even when were supporting someone popular and well-known), wed outnumber the audience. I neednt have worried Jim Davies predicted people queuing down the stairs of the (admittedly tiny) venue, and he was spot-on. The place was full, so it made a nice change for us to play in front of real human beings (recently Ive taken to knitting my own audience members). Despite having fallen off my bike on Monday and, it seems, cracked a rib or two, I still managed to hit all the requisite notes of the set, though this I put down to the beautifully anaesthetic qualities of strong beer. Actually on Tuesday I was really worried that I wouldnt be able to sing at all Soundcheck was surprisingly easy for everyone amazingly Id managed to work out how to plug the PA in and make it work. From then it didnt seem like at all long before people began arriving. In fact I was soundchecking myself while desperately hoping Ian (TNMs bassist) would arrive soon he did, and it wasnt long before we were delivering as good a set as we could muster. I think by the end of the set we had the audience on-side, which was most rewarding. Anton was next onstage, kicking off with a new song called She Wears A Green Leaf, with some lovely harmonies from Sue Jordan (of local types The Inflatable Buddhas). If youve not seen Anton or heard his albums then I strongly suggest you do start with A Splendid Tray and move on to Guladong youll thank yourself Anton turned in another great set its been great to have the opportunity of seeing him play a good few times in the last few weeks. By the time he finishes Im starting to really see what a great night its shaping up to be. Pat took the stage armed with his Burns guitar and DAT machine and wow its a set that shimmers and shivers, though with hardly anything from particularly far back in his catalogue just one number from Waiting For The Love Bus. Everything else, save for his starter cover of Vicious, is pretty new. My favourite was a new song called Shakey the end section of this sends a shiver of excitement through the crowd. I wondered how on Earth John Andrew would follow that. Id not heard of The Black Watch before this gig was organised, but now Id recommend them to anyone particularly the latest album The Hypnotising Sea well worth checking out. Recorded, TBW are very textural, lots of guitars, quite lush arrangements, so I couldnt imagine how hed communicate this in the medium of acoustic guitar. I neednt have worried, as his set was quite beautiful hes got a lovely voice that comes across live even better than on disc and a very interesting guitar style, all funny tunings and capos. If any of ye LA fegs are reading, do check TBW out soonest. The evening went just about as well as it possibly could have done everyone got drunk; everyone got paid didnt make it to bed until 3.30am, making it the latest work night ever! We had a few fegs in, too great indeed that Brian made it over from Chippenham and had er dinner with us, Jim Davies brought a good crowd with him, star that he is, and it was great to see Tony B and Nichola (but far, far too brief!). Its Tuesday and to be honest, my heads still spinning! CheersMatt ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Apr 2005 10:07:05 -0700 From: Elizabeth Brion Subject: Re: Look, it's Robin Zander! Hi List, I was listening to "OK Computer" last night and I was thinking that I bought that album for a strange (and fairly stupid) reason. Someone on a mailing said it was the perfect accompaniment to "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace. Which I thought must be a load of crap, but I was curious. This is probably tied with how I got into Magazine which is that I saw "Secondhand Daylight" and thought that Magazine was just about the coolest name for a band. Instant sell. I imagine there are worse reasons to get into really good bands. Maybe.
