Turns out his wife was a math professor there. The place was packed and I realized then how deprived Victoria is of cultural life - if they could pack an auditorium for a book reading. He was an amusing man, a good time was had by all. We were living in an isolated cabin on little Salt Spring Island that year, but traded houses with our landlords to see the Big City. What is arbitrary about the decision? Bushie decided to honor the pope because the pope is popular, and he wanted to ingratiate himself to the people who are utterly devoted to the pope (a group that is not necessarily synonymous with Catholics, of course) at a moment when his popularity is nosediving. He decided not to honor Arafat because he is not popular and didn't want to offend a lot of potential GOP voters (especially Jewish potential GOP voters). They may very well be crass and opportunistic decisions, but they are hardly arbitrary. And, for once, I actually think that part of it that Bushie - -- in his own pathetic, pigfucking way -- actually respected the pope (though in the way most Americans did, namely completely ignoring everything he said they disagreed with) whereas he didn't respect Arafat (even though Bush is far more like Arafat than the pope).
