Um, I don't think you've spoken to too many recovering Catholics recently. My husband and I just went out to dinner with friends of ours, and I was the lone Jew with my guy (the German Catholic) and my friends (one generation away from County Cork), and generosity of spirit wasn't exactly on anyone's minds. Most of the banter was pretty base, but perhaps not as base the ideals of a man who helped condemn lots of third world women to death by denouncing condom use, thereby aiding and abetting the AIDS epidemic. James -- James Dignan, Dunedin, New Zealand The album was The Wedding Album and was reviewed in Melody Maker by Richard Williams: "Sides two and four consist entirely of single tones maintained throughout, presumably produced electronically. This might sound arid, to say the least, but in fact constanr listening reveals a curious point: the pitch of the tone alters frequently, but only by micro-tones or, at most, a semi-tone. This oacillation produces an almost subliminal, uneven 'beat' which maintains interest". The Turf is very old, it has to be said - it's probably been there nearly 1,000 years, so it's a nice historical place to play... also I like the fact it's tucked away under the bridge of sighs (the one that appears in Itchycoo Park as a matter of fact). When I got to the Turf, I found the guys who run it had added a couple of extra acts to the bill - Tariq was excellent, really transformed the atmosphere in the garden. Joe Swarbrick wasn't really my cup of tea, but not bad at all - touch of the D. Bowies I thought. Mark Bosley I really rate, though I don't know why he bothers with covers - his own songs are excellent. I didn't think it was too cold but I know Anton complained of his hands freezing up a little. His set, as Tulloch said, was great. I must say I was happy to do the longer set as it was our first performance with Chris (on tabla) - with any luck Chris'll be switching between proper kit and tabla in not so very long... Thankfully, as there weren't masses of people in the audience, our fellow feg Jim Davies had mustered a decent crowd... icing on the cake for me was the Ginger Bear - a delicious beer made with ginger (maybe why I didn't feel the cold!). Sorry to be so unbearably self-promoting, but I thought I'd better mention the Port Mahon, St Clements, Oxford, April 14th again: The Black Watch (www.theblackwatchmusic.com) + The Jazz Butcher (www.jazzbutcher.com) +Anto Bairbean (www.antonbarbeau.com) + The New Moon Cheers Matt >From: "Marc Hewson" >Reply-To: "Marc Hewson" >To: fegmaniax@smoe.org >Subject: New Moon At The Turf, March 31st 2005 >Date: Sat, 02 Apr 2005 10:21:43 +0100 > >After a pleasant afternoon's shopping in Oxford and an incredibly cheap >meal in the Gloucester Arms, we got to the Turf Tavern at about 7:30, far >too early but it meant we got a prime seat in front of the playing area. >The Turf is the oldest pub in Oxford (and one of the oldest in England) >and consists of a bewildering series of interconected bars (with very low >beams) and courtyards, one of which was the setting for the evening's >entertainment. Peter Jackson's next film is a remake of "King Kong." The original "King Kong" had an embarrassingly bad sequel called "Son of Kong." So, the joke is that PJ and company also will be remaking "Son of Kong" and adding a third Kong film, thus mounting a second "trilogy" a la "The Lord of the Rings." The execution is better than the premise. Of course, this guy (http://www.tombstones.org.uk/~ankman/acu1/richard_1980.jpg) preferred the Ralph Bakshi and Dino DeLaurentis versions of these stories.... Ah. See, I didn't know there *wasn't* a _Son of Kong_ being planned. I mean, the odds are pretty good there eventually will be - with nearly everything else being remade... But sometimes the best satire is *so* close to the truth that it's barely perceptible.
