However, in this case, it was David Lindley (who also played about 700 other instruments). My attendance at this show was completely unexpected, though: I'm not really a Lindley fan, though I've respected his playing. The way it worked is like this: Rose and I were vacationing at our friends Bob and Susan's house in Lancaster, California (where Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart grew up). Middle of last week, two friends of theirs, who also work at Antelope Valley College where Susan teaches, show up and say, hey, do you want to go see David Lindley at McCabe's Friday night? Bob and Susan say, sure, but our friends Rose and Jeff are visiting - so we'll have to check with them. Well, what the hell: not a show I would have chosen on my own, but I suspected I'd find enough to enjoy, and one-person acoustic shows at the very least allow you a more personal insight into the player in ways that allow more leeway than full-band shows, with their greater distance (emotionally and communicatively, if not physically). Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not someone who generally enjoys music based entirely on sterling technique, but Lindley's songs (even when they're not hilarious - I will never think of a Krispy Kreme in the same way ever again) are solid as well, and of course the stage banter helps a lot at a show like this. I can also now state that I've heard quasi-Appalachian death ballads performed on the electric saz or something. These tickets materialized later in the same day as our lunch with Rex (thanks for the kind remarks - back atcha) - who spent the entire damned time trying to get the whole room to talk about him, his band, his shirt, his shoes, and his special, rare guitar pick. Regardless, I had a great time - even though there were two loud people on the street yammering on for hours about how annoying it all was and misrecognizing friendly disagreement as failed debate - I think their names were Statler and Waldorf. We had lunch at this restaurant run by expatriate leftist Argentinean cattle workers - I think it was called The Gaucho Marxist Cafe or something. (That was a lame-ass joke - but truly, before the Lindley show, we wandered into a coffee shop a few blocks away and as we were leaving, a couple of guitar players tuning up in the corner asked why we were leaving before they started playing. We told them why - they got it - but then mentioned that they usually held meetings of the Communist Party back there. We laughed - and one of 'em said, no, really, we do, in a tone that suggested that he was indeed serious. So now you know: this being an artist-run joint by the looks of things, perhaps it shoulda been called the Gouacho Marxist Cafe.) It's not my fault, really: our circuitious route back home was like trimodal or something. - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 00:01:30 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Re: a-Huh????????????? Whatever I posted, it was so minor and peripheral that I don't even recall what you're talking about. Hardly a central posting trait of mine, such as your own "Here's a chance for me to wax rhapsodic about my band and guitars some more" tangents. Being the tender heart that I am, I actually thought your post was a bit of an overkill (Q., sometimes it seems like you need three pages to say what I say in three sentences ;)), but the above nugget bears repeating. > Several of us here > think of ourselves as Eb's friends. Personal, self-referential note: I was in Amoeba Records today, and was startled/delighted to find that one of the "Amoeba Recommends..." display racks contained a whole row of "Cuddle Up with Claudine" CDs! That's the first time I've seen even *one* copy in a store's physical stock...much less *eight* of them. Surely this should be the final proof that Amoeba is a uniquely amazing record store. ;) More weekend-festivity descriptions to follow. Sad to hear it... "Everyone, sitting here in the office trying to figure out what to write, we are a bit messed up at the moment. Last night, our mate, and Crowded House drummer Paul Hester took his own life. Over the years Paul has swung the extremes of happiness and sadness, but none of us ever thought this would happen. He loved life too much, and it really seems like a bad dream that we hope we'll wake up from tomorrow. At the moment we are trying to look after Paul's family, he leaves behind two beautiful girls, so if people could not email us that would be appreciated during this incredibly sad time. It doesn't seem real, but (sadly) it is. I'll post more on this later on, we are all just getting our heads around this loss of one of our family.
