Meredith, when thanking Robyn for giving him the opportunity to open, said he had become a big Robyn fan around the time of "Balloon Man," but then sort of forgot about him until recently, which struck me as a poor way to win over more ardent Robyn fans in the audience. He opened with Globe of Frogs and also played I Got the Hots, unless I dreamed that. Also a blistering cover of Bathory's "Armageddon" ... The only guitar thing I remember was that he used the acoustic for every song except maybe two (?). He talked a bit about resurrecting Jimi Hendrix to take over from Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense, and pointed out that most songs are either about summoning or repelling, which he described as "Fuck me" and "Fuck off!" songs. "All the great songs are about both. Or at least, all of mine are." Sorry I didn't meet up with any Fegs. Actually, the only words I said to anyone the whole night were "Yuengling draft ... thanks." Which is a typical night out for me. I was up fairly near the stage on the right for a few songs, then I got tired and had to sit in the back for a while, then had to go stand again when a girl with a cigarette sat next to me. I think I saw Dave Derosa, but I'm not positive (it was dark, the last time I saw him was four years ago, and anyway recognizing people is a social skill, so I don't have it). One or two other faces looked sort of familiar. Didn't spot Melissa at all. Thus it was, if memory serves, the only Robyn show I've ever attended by myself. The DVD doesn't have a lot of extras on it, just a commentary from Gram's daughter Polly Parsons who was the visionary behind the shows last year in Santa Barbara and LA. Those that performed and are on the DVD include Keith Richards, Lucinda Williams, John Doe, Norah Jones, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakum, Kathleen Edwards and Jay Farrar of Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt fame. A must buy for any Gram fan. A couple of years ago, I was at a Halloween party in Hollywood and Polly showed up. She apparently works as a makeup artist, and her "costume" was that she had arranged one of those deals where she was topless yet "painted" to look like she was wearing something. Oh my. Oh my. >The room just stopped dead when she walked in. DEAD. Very sexy woman. Yes, she is very sexy as well in the DVD! The concerts were sponsored by MAP, Musicians Assistance Program, and Polly gave a nice speech about the importance of religion, friends and family mid-concert and how people should seek them out as alternatives to drugs. Having lost her father to drugs at the tender age of seven, Polly seems to have healed after years of grieving over her loss. If you were a girl named Lisa in the '80s (and most of the girls were named Lisa), you had a room full of Care Bears, rooted for the Houston Astros entirely based on their rainbow jerseys, and loved Journey. It's a fact. I also wonder how many people, like me, thought they had a female vocalist, and, after seeing their first band photo (but before reading the caption or accompanying story), *still* thought they had a female vocalist.
