Shirts: First set: black button-up shirt with white dots. RH referred to it when doing a Dylan cover off of the "dots" disc of "Robyn Sings!". Second set: similarly cut shirt, more colorful pattern. Crowd comment: "Nice shirt!" Pants: black-looking jeans. Hair: White or close to it. The sort of long-on-one-side thing observable on the photos in the Luxor artwork is very prominent now. As a consequence his hair-flips now go in one direction only. Girth: Quite slim indeed. Telecaster: Not RH's and barely functional. I'm already back in Phoenix and need to be heading to work in less than an hour (and working until midnight). The first set was probably the best of all three evenings: Mexican God A Skull, A Suitcase, and A Long Red Bottle of Wine Daisy Bomb 52 Stations 1974 Chinese Bones (piano) Self-loving Groover (new) Ted, Woody & Junior (Telecaster) She Doesn't Exist Any More You & Oblivion Solpadeine (acoustic) Television set 2 Arms of Love She Reached for a Light The Yip Song Vegetation and Dimes (add Winston Watson on drums) The End of Your Nose (Museum of Sex)(?) I Wish I Could Fly (new) Visions of Johanna--Dylan (add Paul on bass--last name never used, Winston's friend) Listening to the Higsons (Robyn on Telecaster--moved to piano at the end of the song) Up On Cripple Creek (the Band) A really enjoyable evening, but the set seemed to fall apart at the end rather than finishing with anything really outstanding. Maybe I was a bit bummed that I didn't get a single request played out of 8 songs submitted. I was really glad to hear 52 Stations, but I probably got my hopes a bit high for something less played. One of the friends I was with and I both managed to buy cones that Robyn did up for the merchandise area, and they still had the vintage shirts (I've come to turn you on, Please don't call me Reg, He never made love to a loaf of bread...). Robyn was really friendly all three nights and easy to approach. He will be back at the Largo tonight, to see Jon Brion do his show, so I'd expect a bit more Hitchcock/Largo action to happen. I don't know if anyone is planning to be there from the group, but I'd be interested to hear what happens. Looking forward to seeing him Sunday at Hotel Congress in Tucson. Later, Marc To me, boxing is like a ballet, except there's no music, no choreography and the dancers hit each other. Formed by Kristin Hersh in 2003, 50 Foot Wave released a self-titled mini album last year - 6 blistering songs whose electrifying energy astonished anyone who encountered them. Now the band follow that up with "Golden Ocean", their full-length debut. 50 Foot Wave is Hersh's first new band since she founded the influential Throwing Muses, and it's a harder, faster, more direct experience than anything she has recorded before. Kristin sums up her vision for 50 Foot Wave thus : "What could be more fun that turning everything up to 10 and screaming your head off for an hour every night?" *** These are the songs which make up "Golden Ocean", as described by Kristin : * Long Painting "There was a company in Seattle called "Long Painting" that was being accused of poisoning the environment when we lived there. We also have a very "long painting" of my husband done by the artist Rufo, hanging in our living room. A little beauty, a little ugly...it all works out in the end. Or it's supposed to, anyway." * Bone China "Bones and dishes break, so does most everything else, especially when you're jumpy and twitchy." * Clara Bow "Summer is SO stupid and EVERYBODY likes it. Why? After she retired, Clara Bow moved out to the desert with her husband and sons and then lost control of her brain." * Pneuma "Pneuma is soul breath. We have to breathe through pollution and see past the idiots and hear each other through their inane chatter." * Dog Days "A dirty beach, angry coffee, a prickly touch... all things that are supposed to be soothing but which aren't always on your side." * Petal "Going home, you find out that home's gone, so you try to remember it exactly as it was." * Sally Is A Girl "This song is about a blackout in August in New Orleans. It's very hot there, even at night, so everybody was outside walking around, trying to keep cool. It didn't work. The title comes from an episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" about gender confusion and stereotyping." * El Dorado "This is a "life on the road" song, unfortunately. Sorry. Most of my life has been spent on the road. At least it's not a country song, though. When you get fried eggs in a diner, they always look like eyeballs." * Ginger Park "Remembering what it was like to grow up in a beach town... greasy french fries and glossy tourists. Diving... Killing time falling into each other, each of you hoping you're good enough for the other one." * Golden Ocean "The "golden ocean" is what my 8 year old son, Wyatt, calls the LA lights at night. He puts me to shame by seeing beauty in everything, when I just glance up and then back down again." *** "Golden Ocean" is available on CD and as a digital download which you can buy by following this link : http://www.4ad.com/digitalsingles/goldenocean.html 4AD http://www.4ad.com To unsubscribe/change your preferences visit: http://beggars.com/subscribe/4ad/43D8WM6CSM_1664272/ Visit http://www.avdeck.com to listen to the latest releases and exclusive interviews from 4AD and other independent labels. ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V14 #61 *******************************
