I wasn't as thrilled with it as I was with GCR when I first played it after the RH show last year. I had put it aside for the winter months, it's not really winter music, but for some reason I played it at home last night and really enjoyed it. It's definitely a extension of GCR in style and themes. I don't think that there's anything on it quite as good as Life Itself or GCR, but then it doesn't really have anything as weak as Stripes or Underclass on it. They do make a damn fine pair of albums and if they prove to be the start of a trilogy then even better. When GCR came out I mailed Lee CB to see if Kim could be tempted into playing some live shows, but it seemed he couldnt! This release only rekindles my desire to see him play a set of his own material - that december band tour seems like an opportunity badly missed. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2005 14:08:41 -0500 From: The Great Quail Subject: Re: [loud-fans] American Dad Eddie writes, > but i think that > *Futurama* is about the unfunniest/stoopidest piece of shit imaginable. I actually got not-so-good vibes about a return visit. That's either defensiveness, woman's intuition, or delusions that I "get" Robyn, but one thing I can say that is relatively factual is that the new WXPN venue, while nice, seemed clean and organized to the point of being a bit sterile and/or boring, and (back to "getting" him) that doesn't seem like Robyn's thing. In the unix world, most everything can be done by a utility which is a small program that does one specialized task (and does it well). There is a utility for finding strings of characters in files. There is a utility for figuring out what kind of data is in a file. There is a utility for creating disk images and a completely different utility for writing those images to an optical drive. When you want that one thing done, you invoke the utility. When you take a higher level view of the job to be done and want to ignore the specific tasks required to do the big job, you use an application. This program is a kind of wrapper for all of the different utilities required to do the job you want to do. There's an application for making CDs out of MP3s, for instance. You click and drag all the MP3 files you want to put on the CD into a little window and hit "burn" or something. In the background, though, some mpg decoder called to process the sound files and some audio transcoder is called to make the right-sized data chunks for CD burning and then some CD burner is called to actually write to the drive. You just see a progress bar and then a "done" window pops up. Although these days many of those utilities are called through libraries rather than running the utilities all separately and sometimes all the functions you want are tied up in one big program, the concept of a program that handles multiple small sub-tasks while essentially hiding those tasks individually from the user is called and application. A client is a utility for accessing a remote service. Some clients are full of features not directly related to interfacing the remote service and they're often called "client applications". A client is just a kind of conduit between a local machine and a remote service. Peer-to-peer software is a little tricky because it's not always clear which side is behaving like a client and which is taking the role of server. Often, the same application will function as both at the same time. Right now, I'm using an ssh client on my desktop computer to connect to the ssh server on a computer in a closet down the hall which is, in turn, running my mail client application that will, when I'm done typing this, connect with my mail server software and send this message. It's all very abstract, when you think about it. Yes, there was a Simpson episode this past Sunday after the game (before the premiere of American Dad, in which they revealed (via a brief meeting between CBG and Ned) that CBG's name is ... Jeff Albertson. The joke is that the reason no one knew his name is that before Ned, no one had even bothered to ask. It was completely random and pointless, which would be fine if it had actually been funny. Like if say, Bumblebee Guy's real name had been revealed to be Jeff Albertson. And it was the worst Simpsons episode in years -- trying to parody the overreaction to Janet's boobs and _The Passion of the Christ_ in one swell foop just didn't gel at all. A spectacular failure. ===== "I had naively believed all these many years that Americans genuinely believed in freedom of speech. The general consensus among Simpsons geeks is that Bumblebee Guy's real name is "Chesperito," for what it's worth. I do agree, though--it was a waste of a gag, not funny, and in the process ruined a running gag that actually was funny. It is really a sign of how little respect the current producers and writers have for the history of the show and the long-term fans. > And it was the worst Simpsons episode in years -- trying > to parody the overreaction to Janet's boobs and _The > Passion of the Christ_ in one swell foop just didn't gel > at all. That said, it wasn't worse than "Homer v Dignity," where one of the key punchlines was that Homer was raped by a panda bear at the zoo, and a Thanksgiving parade where people were soaked by buckets of chum. It was very, very close, though. Simply awful, and painfully so.
