I wasn't as thrilled with it as I was with GCR when I first played it after the RH show last year. I had put it aside for the winter months, it's not really winter music, but for some reason I played it at home last night and really enjoyed it. It's definitely a extension of GCR in style and themes. I don't think that there's anything on it quite as good as Life Itself or GCR, but then it doesn't really have anything as weak as Stripes or Underclass on it. They do make a damn fine pair of albums and if they prove to be the start of a trilogy then even better. When GCR came out I mailed Lee CB to see if Kim could be tempted into playing some live shows, but it seemed he couldnt! This release only rekindles my desire to see him play a set of his own material - that december band tour seems like an opportunity badly missed. >>i'm not gonna say anything about jews or asses ever again probably, but i would contribute to a feglist music compilation. beetlejuice >Me too - that would force me to finish this thing in open G that I've been >working on beetlejuice And as for Varg / Grishnack taking D&D too seriously. I haven't heard it either. But it seems like this is the first Green Day album where anyone paid strong attention to the lyrics, so that alone suggests artistic growth. I saw them sing on Carson Daly a few weeks ago -- they did a *nine-minute* song from the album, which had sort of a "Quick One"-style structure with three or four little songs stitched together into a suite. I wasn't especially impressed with it, but you've gotta admit that's definitely pushing the envelope. I've never been a fan, but I have no objections to American Idiot ranking highly in the poll. Definitely seems like one of the year's pivotal releases. Now, what's the story with the #23 appearance of a MIA/Diplo album *without a label*? I've been hearing chatter about MIA elsewhere, lately.... Eb - ------------- FOX Shifts 'American Dad,' May Trim 'Development' LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Even though its reviews were almost universally middling-to-negative, the preview of "American Dad" drew more than 15 million viewers to FOX on Sunday (Feb. 6) night. That successful performance has prompted FOX to juggle its future Sunday line-up, which may mean bad things for Emmy-winning comedy "Arrested Development." "American Dad," the new animated comedy from "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, will still have its real premiere on Sunday, May 1. FOX has, however, moved the show up an hour from 9:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ET. "American Dad" will now officially launch between the 350th episode of "The Simpsons" and the fourth season premiere of "Family Guy." The series, which will air encores as part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block, focuses on mid-level CIA agent Stan Smith, his wife, his two kids, his alien and his fish with the brain of a German guy. FOX also announced that the schedule will allow the first three episodes of "American Dad" to air after new episodes of "The Simpsons." As a result of the shift, "Arrested Development" will now have to end its second season by late April. According to The Hollywood Reporter, FOX is expected to reduce its order for "Arrested Development," though specifics haven't been announced. Despite endless critical acclaim and awards attention, "Development" is averaging only 6.06 million viewers per week this season in the Sunday 8:30 p.m. time slot. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2005 15:13:10 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: Boulevard of Broken Idiots On Wed, 9 Feb 2005, Eb wrote: > Now, what's the story with the #23 appearance of a MIA/Diplo album > *without a label*? She and Diplo just did a "mixtape" as a teaser; I think it was sent out as a promo, but it might just have been intentionally leaked. And then everyone downloaded it from the internet. The track listing struck me as oddly symmetric as it's 13 tracks in total and it's tracks 2 and 12 that are the long ones. I am trying to get a handle on this as my father recently spit some Green Day questions at me. He said that one of his teachers had played a nine-minute song Green Day song in class. I made my best attempt to explain Green Day which was basically my saying about five variations of "they aren't bad; they aren't good" along with a disclaimer each time that what I just said was kind of inaccurate since it makes them sound worse than I meant to make them sound (i.e. the denotation was as I wanted, the connotation wasn't...) and I borrowed a friend's CD from work (I haven't listened to it yet; I believe Dad's ahead on this point...) My father's been taking oddball history classes at local universities for years (free for those over 65!) and that best I can get out of him is that a teacher is making comparisons between " Jesus of Suburbia" and Don Quixote. Apparently, "Jesus of Suburbia" traces out a history of (rock? pop?) music. My father informed his teacher that this would be quite lost on him. Unfortunately, I didn't find out much more about the Green Day Mystery as my dad started to get irritated or perhaps just bored when I tried to get more specifics (I will be trying again at a later date...) and the conversation devolved into our standard discussion of unresolved disagreement of what post-modernism is and the accompanying discussion of why I like David Foster Wallace and he doesn't (= television is what it comes down to I believe; I think our generation gap is best described by that.) I have no idea why I am so interested in this other than I likely find it somehow charming to discuss the rock and roll with my 70-year old father. Last time we were in deep rock and roll discussions, Jello Biafra and the boys were being sued. xo Lauren ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Feb 2005 23:54:32 -0600 From: Dolph Chaney Subject: Re: Boulevard of Broken Idiots At 11:40 PM 2/9/2005, Lauren wrote: >I have no idea why I am so interested in this other than I likely find it >somehow charming to discuss the rock and roll with my 70-year old father.
