NEW DRUMMER JOINS REM The members of REM have finally found a full-time replacement for departed drummer BILL BERRY - former MINISTRY star BILL REIFLEN. Berry left the band in 1997, and his role had been filled by a string of temporary drummers since, most notably by former BECK rocker JOEY WARONKER, reports MTV. Reiflen played drums on REM's latest effort, 2004's AROUND THE SUN. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2005 15:40:19 -0500 From: "Bachman, Michael" Subject: RE: Terry Jones's War On The > >Brian Nupp wrote: > >> > >> I think you mean: "There are degrees, *little* man." > > > >Are you alluding to that thing that Eddie used to rave about? > > > > Stewart > > Yes. "used to"? tee-hee, here's a funny little anecdote. i played the record at work quite frequently, and it eventually sunk in with the chef, who would often say something (to my everlasting delight) along the lines of, "hey, cocksucker! why didn't you get the half & half, i told you?" brian may have forgotten this, but when i first sent him that disc, he thought that it was *my* field recording, and e-mailed to ask me if i was okay. i tried to play along, but he eventually found out the true nature of the recordings. speaking of movies, i'm surprised i haven't seen any references anywhere to Doctor Zhivago with regards to the iced-over neighbourhoods in massachusetts. also, is it true, as claimed in the making-of documentary, the *Wizard Of Oz* has been seen by more people that any other movie? i had thought that i'd read somewhere that *Salt Of The Earth* held that honour. And that one was also too long. But at least it had more relevance to the list, since it had the Python connection. My daughter is doing an essay on the death penalty and wants to find some stats on overturned convictions. We were able to find some information at the Amnesty International website. Does anyone have any other ideas where to look or good key words for a google search? The snow here in Boston is mindboggling. Since my husband has a herniated disc, my son just had a tooth extracted, and my daughter only weighs 75 pounds, all the shoveling has been left to me. If it weren't for the Patriots and Red Sox, I'd get the fuck out of here FOREVER!!! Waronker Rieflin (as I've always seen it spelled) I don't know that I'd call that a "string" of temporary drummers. > Reiflen played drums on REM's latest effort, 2004's > AROUND THE SUN. Where the Ministry influence was so relevant....I'd rather they gave Stringfellow and McCaughey full-time status, so they could help, you know, write some tunes that are worth a crap.... ===== "I had naively believed all these many years that Americans genuinely believed in freedom of speech. [But I] discovered there that when you made an utterance that was remotely contrary to what the White House was saying, then they attacked you. For a South African the deja vu was frightening. They behaved exactly the same way that used to happen here [during apartheid]: vilifying those who are putting forward a slightly different view." -- Desmond Tutu __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Bring back Holsapple. Or shoot the damned horse. Q: Does this mean Rieflin is gonna start getting songwriting credits, per the band's historical credit arrangement? The sentence implies there were more than two. Waronker was only the "most notable" substitute. For one, Barrett Martin filled in too, right? Eb ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2005 11:44:36 -0500 From: The Great Quail Subject: Re: VCR alert > Maybe I'll get a TV someday ;) Doubt it, though; North American > Television is rubbish. Oh, Stewart and Rex, must you both join this tedious, humorless, pompous, self-righteous cult? TV is just like books, movies, magazines, or any other form of art and entertainment. Of course there's more crap than good stuff, but that's a shabby reason to forsake the whole medium. Not own a television? You might as well say, "I'm never reading another book." (Of course, a statement like that doesn't fly as well at coffee-shop Kant sing-a-longs, Noam Chomsky conventions, and Internet mailing lists.) Rubbish? Why, HBO is reason enough to own a television, with The Sopranos, The Wire, and Curb Your Enthusiasm; and to a lesser extent, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, Entourage, the Ali G Show... And then there's shows like West Wing, Lost, and Battlestar Galactica; not to mention the Simpsons, Arrested Development, That 70s Show, and Raymond. And this isn't even mentioning reruns of good shows.... Then of course there's the many other functions of a television, such as playing Futurama DVDs, watching concert videos, hosting one's Xbox, and watching the BBC. Ah, sweet television. I swear one day my child will look like you.... Anyway, with all respect to Rex and Stewart, I have to say this -- I find that when people proudly assert they don't own a television set, they are more concerned with projecting a particular image than with really partaking in any kind of meaningful dialogue about art, entertainment, or pop culture. It just sounds insufferably pompous to me -- like running a James Joyce site, or listening to Rush. - --Quail ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2005 11:56:42 -0800 From: Rex Broome Subject: Re: VCR alert > Anyway, with all respect to Rex and Stewart, I have to say this -- I find > that when people proudly assert they don't own a television set, they are > more concerned with projecting a particular image than with really partaking > in any kind of meaningful dialogue about art, entertainment, or pop culture. Well, in my case it's more a financial concern than anything: can't afford to buy one, can't afford cable thereafter, certainly don't need the temptation of buying all those tasty DVD's that keep coming out. I know there's good TV out there and I've posted plenty about it over the years. But I also missed the beginning of the fall season, too, so I'm out of the loop anyway. It's also that, for this particular moment in my life, living without TV seems the way to go. I'd rather read. Part of it may be that in the relationship that's just ended, my former partner watched a lot more TV than me, and enjoyed some things that weren't to my taste... and also enjoyed channel-surfing (watching TV just to watch TV, which I do find a bit tedious), So I guess I'm making up for being exposed to more TV than I wanted by going without for a while. No true disdain for the medium is intended, nor am I trying to style myself as anything other than a guy with little money and less spare time, making a decision about how to entertain himself within those constraints. I still do listen to Television, though! - -Rex "Insufferably Pompous would be my middle name if my middle name weren't Rex" Broome ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2005 13:58:20 -0600 From: Jeff Subject: Re: VCR alert On Thu, 27 Jan 2005 11:44:36 -0500, The Great Quail wrote: > It just sounds insufferably pompous to me -- like running a James Joyce > site, or listening to Rush.
