Hey, I've joined Stewart in the "I don't have a TV" brigade. So far no problem. I've basically lived without really watching TV for half a year already; missed everything that started in the fall, so I'm already sufficiently disengaged. One thing that really bugs in my current life is hearing everybody talk about goddamn Desperate Housewives, a lighthearted and wildly popular program about marital strife featuring a character named "Rex". Fuck you, whatever network runs that show. Fuck you very much. Oh, and mad props to feglister Catherine Simpson, who helped me move this weekend. I think she's offlist right now, but y'all should know she's a good 'un. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 09:56:58 -0800 From: "A Wonderful Human Person" Subject: Re: Terry Jones's War On The "War On Terror" well, the last time i did that (), eb went all apeshit on me for cutting-and-pasting rather that giving the URL. and, being as nobody disagreed with him, i figured that the practice was in breach of list etiquette. but, whatever. To me, the Best Actor category seems unusually weak. I guess this IS Jamie Foxx's year. Yeesh. Best Actress seems thin too, but that's more typical. Looks like a second win for Swank?! No Best Picture for Fahrenheit 911 or The Passion of the Christ. Interestin'. WHOA! And reading on, I just noticed -- not even a DOCUMENTARY nomination for Fahrenheit 911? I haven't seen any of the "spin" discussions on TV yet, but I would assume this is a major, major subject of debate. When did Finding Neverland become such a big-news film? I wonder if this is another one of those Miramax films which was bulldozed into the nominations by a relentless ad campaign. After being so happy to have Lord of the Rings to "root for" last year, I feel quite a void this time around. With the possible exceptions of Sideways and A Very Long Engagement, I don't foresee any of the nominated films as becoming one of "my" films. If you know what I mean. IIRC Moore didn't submit Fahrenheit 9/11 for the documentary category, hoping for a Best Picture nod instead. There was also some quirk in the documentary rule that prohibits a televised showing of the documentary with six months of it's theatrical release, and Moore wanted to show it as part of his big pay-per-view special on election eve, so he had to forego documentary eligibility so he could show it that might. Of course, the special didn't happen after Viacom (or whoever) pulled out at the very last second, etc blah blah blah. > Now, why wasn't Jon Brion nominated for best score? Nor Gondry for direction. And as much as I hate Jim Carrey, I'm not sure he shouldn't have been up for best actor. ===== "I had naively believed all these many years that Americans genuinely believed in freedom of speech. They behaved exactly the same way that used to happen here [during apartheid]: vilifying those who are putting forward a slightly different view." -- Desmond Tutu __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
