The master tape had been spliced all over the place, probably so that DJs could use snippets of the program on air. After I digitized the audio I had to put the different pieces in logical order, which was no easy task. Therefore this is incomplete, but believe me, it's quite a great find. This is the high quality studio recording, not an FM broadcast, and probably contains bits that did not get broadcast live on the air. I only got mine a year ago, but I'm now moving into, let's say, the early 21st Century... I'm moving into a new apartment and see absolutely no need to establish a land line. Of course the fact that I have absolutely no money whatsoever probably contributes to not wanting another bill to pay every month, so there's that. And, oh yeah, REAP, my marriage. Actually, it could be going way worse, as these things are measured. But it is indeed sad. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2005 20:29:09 -0600 From: steve Subject: Barney, SpongeBob, and Jimmy team up to turn kids queer (NR) What took the fundies so long to catch on? - - Steve > (For those who refuse to get a free subscription) January 20, 2005 Conservatives Pick Soft Target: A Cartoon Sponge By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 - On the heels of electoral victories barring same-sex marriage, some influential conservative Christian groups are turning their attention to a new target: the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants. "Does anybody here know SpongeBob?" Dr. James C. Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, asked the guests Tuesday night at a black-tie dinner for members of Congress and political allies to celebrate the election results. SpongeBob needed no introduction. In addition to his popularity among children, who watch his cartoon show, he has become a well-known camp figure among adult gay men, perhaps because he holds hands with his animated sidekick Patrick and likes to watch the imaginary television show "The Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy." Now, Dr. Dobson said, SpongeBob's creators had enlisted him in a "pro-homosexual video," in which he appeared alongside children's television colleagues like Barney and Jimmy Neutron, among many others. The makers of the video, he said, planned to mail it to thousands of elementary schools to promote a "tolerance pledge" that includes tolerance for differences of "sexual identity." The video's creator, Nile Rodgers, who wrote the disco hit "We Are Family," said Mr. Dobson's objection stemmed from a misunderstanding. Mr. Rodgers said he founded the We Are Family Foundation after the Sept. 11 attacks to create a music video to teach children about multiculturalism. The video has appeared on television networks, and nothing in it or its accompanying materials refers to sexual identity. The pledge, borrowed from the Southern Poverty Law Center, is not mentioned on the video and is available only on the group's Web site. Mr. Rodgers suggested that Dr. Dobson and the American Family Association, the conservative Christian group that first sounded the alarm, might have been confused because of an unrelated Web site belonging to another group called "We Are Family," which supports gay youth. "The fact that some people may be upset with each other peoples' lifestyles, that is O.K.," Mr. Rodgers said. "We are just talking about respect." Mark Barondess, the foundation's lawyer, said the critics "need medication." On Wednesday however, Paul Batura, assistant to Mr. Dobson at Focus on the Family, said the group stood by its accusation. "We see the video as an insidious means by which the organization is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids," he said. "It is a classic bait and switch." Only because there are 11 songs on the album, and thus one style has to be in the minority. I count five uptempo (The Infanta, We Both Go Down Together, The Sporting Life, Sixteen Military Wives, and The Mariner's Revenge Song) and six down (Eli The Barrowboy, The Bagman's Gambit, From My Own True Love (Lost At Sea), The Engine Driver, On the Bus Mall, and Of Angels and Angles). The Mariner's Revenge Song is long enough to counter a couple of the slower numbers. Of the downtempo songs, Eli The Barrowboy is an instant classic folk ballad, and Of Angels and Angles a beautiful gem to finish of the album. Huh. I feel like this is the first time I've really enjoyed any of their slow songs ("Eli The Barrowboy" and "The Engine Driver"). To each their own 'n' all. They're basically treading water stylistically, though, and I worry that in the long run their improvements in songwriting won't make up for it. But I'm pretty happy with it right now. a ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2005 06:09:17 +0000 From: 2and2makes5@comcast.net Subject: Re: Barney, SpongeBob, and Jimmy team up to turn kids queer (NR) That bit about videos "...manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids" is so deliciously ironic. In no particular order, but the 1st 2 certainly being my favorites: Of Montreal- Satanic Panic In the Attic Scarlet's Well- Dream Spider Of The Laughing Horse Bebel Gilberto Robyn Hitchcock- Spooked (LP version) Metric- Old World Underground Franz Ferdinand Strokes- Room on Fire Would Be Goods- The Morning After Brian Wilson- Smile The Cure- Connect the Dots box set Prince- Musicology The Strokes- Room on Fire didn't live up to what I first thought it was, but's still pretty good. I didn't do a lot of new listening in 2004, but there were some great releases, like the 1st 2 mentioned. I might be the only one on this list that picked up Scarlet's Well- Dream Spider of the Laughing Horse. It's a shame this album didn't get heard my more people, especially by people on this list who would undoubtably enjoy both the music and the lyrics greatly. Prince- Musicology was given to me upon entering the Prince concert. I probably wouldnt've bought it otherwise, but it's a fine album.
