I had tickets for two Wilco shows that got cancelled earlier this year, and it looked like Arizona might get passed over on the new schedule. Hopefully they will come back and make up the shows they had planned at the two smaller venues. I don't know if they had planned on having Calexico open for the previously scheduled shows, but they were clearly thrilled with the combination. The trumpet players from Calexico wound up playing 4 or 5 songs with Wilco. Wilco played most of the things I'd hoped to hear except "She's a Jar" and "Heavy Metal Drummer". They did a great cover of "Don't Fear the Reaper" to close the show. Calexico surprised me by playing Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart"--it sounded great. I wish they had more than 45 minutes for their set. Towards the end of the Wilco show, I went out to the lobby to close my bar tab and get some water before the encores. I ran into Joey Burns from Calexico. I asked him if he was going to the Neko Case/Sadies show in Tucson next month, on December 7th (Joey and Calexico steel guitarist, Paul Niehaus, both played with her last time she appeared there). He said that they were going to miss it because they were in New York that day. He mentioned that they would be doing a benefit for the Temple of Music and Art, Tucson, AZ in January. I said "You should get Robyn Hitchcock in on that." Joey got this excited look on his face, saying "That's a great idea!" He asked my name and introduced himself again before I headed back into the show. Later, after the end of the encores, I went to the merchandise table to pick up a CD (Calexico has great tour exclusive CDs) and a 45. I hear "Hey Marc!", and there's Joey again. He said that he mentioned the Hitchcock idea to some of the other guys in the band and they are very enthusiastic about it. I'm totally caught off guard about how positive his response is on this, but it sounds like something he'll pursue. Sure hope he pulls it off. As far as I know, Robyn has an open schedule after his early December shows, and it would make sense for him to be back at home in the Tucson area during the milder weather. I post updates if/when I find out anything else. Later, Marc Calexico on tour: 11/22/04 Kingsbury Hall Salt Lake City UT (with Wilco) 11/23/04 Electric Theatre Saint George UT 12/07/04 Bowery Ballroom New York NY 12/09/04 Matrix Boston MA 12/10/04 North Star Bar Philadelphia PA Ambition is like a frog sitting on a Venus's-flytrap. The flytrap can bite and bite, but it won't bother the frog because it only has little tiny plant teeth. But some other stuff could happen and it could be like ambition.
