Porcupine and HUH both have a bit more darkness and density to them than the others, which, between that and the prominence of Sargeant's guitar, make them my nearly equal favorites, but it's all pretty good for those first four records and the STL&S compilation (although many seem to think that STL&S covers all the early bases, and are wrong... don't stop there unless you really don't dig it, because there are stone cold classics you'll miss if you do). I don't care for the self-titled album all that much. Of their later stuff I thought "Flowers" was OK. I actually really like "Reverberation," the one disc they did without Ian McCulloch. I do actually really like the self-titled album, though Ocean Rain is my favorite of all I think. I never heard their album without Ian, but did see them live without him in about 1991 and they did a fantastic cover of 2000 Light Years From Home. Oddly enough i've seen Echo in almost every incarnation. The original lineup (AFAIK) in 1987, then Ian solo in 1989, then Echo without Ian I think in 1991. Some cool things about those shows is that the '87 one was with New Order and Gene Loves Jezebel, and at the Ian solo show the Sugarcubes came out at the end on stage. - -Ken ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Oct 2004 14:16:43 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: Hellooo? As long as we're weighing in, my preferences are for HUH and _Porcupine_. _Ocean Rain_'s really good...except a couple of songs, McCulloch's lyrics cross the line from ignorable to painfully bad. Despite its rather glossy production, I like the self-titled one pretty well - but my least fave of the first five. _Crocodiles_, then, is the mirror of _Ocean Rain_, except it errs in sketchiness and lyrical vagueness instead of ambition and lyrical pretention. As I said, though, both are pretty fine. "Reverberation" is great... should've been issued under a different name, though, especially considered that Electrafixion was, personnel-percentage-wise, as much "Echo & the Bunnymen" as the current version of E&TBM, and their record is *much* better forgotten than Reverberation. Of the "reunion" records I still like the first one, Evergreen, the best... it had Les Pattison on it, which probably has something to do with my preference. Flowers ain't bad, but WAYGTDWYL is best considered a not-bad solo album from Ian. - -Rex - -- _______________________________________________ Find what you are looking for with the Lycos Yellow Pages http://r.lycos.com/r/yp_emailfooter/http://yellowpages.lycos.com/default.asp?SRC=lycos10 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Oct 2004 13:39:34 -0700 From: Vendren Subject: Spooked again A very positive Spooked review on Popmatters: http://popmatters.com/music/reviews/h/hitchcockrobyn-spooked.shtml Palle NP: The Church - Of Skins and Heart ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Oct 2004 14:32:38 -0800 From: "Rex Broome" Subject: Re: Spooked again >>Maturity is an iffy proposition for any rock and roller, >>especially one whose eccentric lyrics and positive energy >>have always seemed eternally youthful. Good stuff which I've played so far includes the "Velvet Goldmine" soundtrack, the latest Sam Phillips CD (jeez, I'd like to see her live again...the first time hardly even counted), two Tortoise CDs, King Crimson/The Power to Believe and that Tom Ze compilation on Luaka Bop (which I already had on a homemade tape). I think that might be because when you're in your teens and early 20's people in their 30's/40's seem older in general. ??? But then, Robyn seemed overly wise to be just in his 30's.
