Thanks. Now can I have a pony? But, hey, I *did* like that song. Great atmosphere, and some interesting chord combinations which Robyn doesn't usually pull out. Actually, I think the Cure would have copied The Damned, AFAIK. I saw them in 1989 for their "Farewell Tour To America". Robert Smith actually seems to believe that he's going to break up The Cure someday, even though everyone else in the world knows damn well he never really could. ===== "'Bushworld' is sort of an alternate universe where things are the opposite of what they seem. I started out the week with Spooked arriving in the mail. I've really been enjoying it quite a bit (then again I've come to really like Luxor, too). Creeped Out sticks in my head the most right now. It was a great week for concerts--I went to the Pixies/Distillers on Monday and the Cramps/Chesterfield Kings/Flathead on Wednesday. Both shows were outstanding and highly recommended if they play near you. I also found out that Neko Case & the Sadies will be coming to the Tucson area on December 7th, so there is more to look forward to. I had a bit of extra time at home on Friday and got a wiring problem on my stereo straightened out, so now I have great sound throughout my house again. It was a project that had been put off too long, and it's a big relief to have it all sorted out. I also installed a multi-speaker selector box so I can choose which speakers I want to run individually--now I can have the main stereo channeled through to my bedroom without it having to play in the computer room/guest room, etc. I seemed like I was getting some bad news yesterday--my sister-in-law has accepted a new job, so my brother and his family will need to relocate in another state next month. Fortunately, the new job is for the Kona Brewing Company, and they'll be moving to the big island in Hawaii. They've made it clear that there is always a place to stay in Hawaii now (and free beer, too). I'm drinking one of their beers right now, a 'Fire Rock Pale Ale', and it's not too bad. Looks like I'll have to be at the brewery before I can sample the stranger ones--Koko Loco Coconut Stout, Big Island Ginger Beer, Da Grind Buzz Kona Coffee Stout, etc. http://www.konabrewingco.com/ The animal quarantine laws are very strict there (4 months), so their cat Oscar is going to move in with me and my cat, Simon. I've been thinking about getting another cat for about a month now--it took a while after my other cat, Nina, passed away in July to even consider getting another, but Simon is clearly getting lonely. The timing is perfect, I need another cat, Oscar needs a home, and I like Oscar quite a bit. Right now, I'm just going to enjoy another beer and appreciate the fact that I don't need to wake up to an alarm clock tomorrow morning. Later, Marc np--Spooked, Flanagan's Song (which I'm guessing was written for Flanagan, the owner at the Largo) You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer. The album was number 1 on the college charts, only to get knocked off by Nirvana--Nevermind. "So You Think You're in Love" was the only Hitchcock song that I ever got tired of hearing on the radio (WHFS played it daily for several months, it seems)--which is part of the reason that I no longer listen to the radio. If I want to hear a song get played to death, I'd at least like to select the song. Later, Marc btw--It was also the last Hitchcock album released on vinyl, where the track listing was the same as the CD release, unless anyone has ever unearthed a vinyl copy of Respect. I believe in making the world safe for our children, but not our children's children, because I don't think children should be having sex. But it was also probably easier to get to the top spot and stay there in 1988 than later. ===== "'Bushworld' is sort of an alternate universe where things are the opposite of what they seem. With these media readers you can store the photos on the iPod, but not display them or anything. You retrieve them from the iPod as you would any other hard drive. But AFAIK you could view them off the iPod just as I previously said you could video: as files from an external hard drive. - -Ken ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 17:49:08 +0100 (BST) From: Jim Davies Subject: spooked, after a week or so Spooked is one of the most wonderful albums that I've ever heard. So's you know where I'm coming from: Luxor didn't work for me; You and Oblivion was all stops and starts; Eye was moving, intense, powerful, but ultimately quite claustrophic. I Often Dream of Trains was too strange and distant to ever be over-familiar, but lacked the warmth and continuity that Eno, for example, might have added to that distance (on Another Green World). Moss Elixir is good, but nowhere near as *realised* as this. This is, to me, the first Robyn solo album that works *as an album*. It flows. It works. I love it. I really do. And the vibe? It's the kind of vibe you get when you're travelling and you know that you've packed everything you need. One way or another. Like Bryter Layter, only with an underlying feeling that things actually *will* be brighter later - more of a sense of moving on? Definitely autumnal. But Autumn here is beautiful. And I'm looking forward to Winter and Spring. x Jim - -- p.s. I think that Underwater Moonlight worked "as an album"; also Fegmania. Maybe Globe of Frogs, too. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 18:10:11 +0100 (BST) From: Jim Davies Subject: spooked, after a week or so Spooked flows in exactly the way that Julian Cope's gig last night didn't. Started magnificently, if you ignore the support :^), then became rather disappointing, then got good again at the end. It was as simple as this: when he was holding his green electro-acoustic, it was great; when he had the double-neck, or the flying V, it wasn't. I mean, you always knew that there was a good song in there, and it's wonderful to see him, 'cos he's fab, but it was too much no no no when it could have been too much yeah yeah yeah. It made me realise just how good a job Robyn does of playing solo electric. He leaves enough space for the words, or for the next note, or for contrast. He doesn't drown everything in flange* and feedback. Bring back Donn-Eye! x Jim (*flange: see under "Roy Harper"). ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 20:04:43 -0500 From: "Fortissimo" Subject: Re: jangliest career change.
