The sun is shining and people walk everywhere, especially with the Monorail being broken. The Space Needle still towers benignly over the Bumbersite, looking from beneath like a spindly giant mushroom that is about to discharge spores out of its gills. Hopefully Democrat spores. The only show I've seen was The Presidents of the United States of America, reconvened in the kind of cricketing gear that my grandfather wore in India in the 1920s. They played their legendary five-strings-between-them set with enormous joy, to a pulsating herd of kids who must have been tiny when the Presidents were originally spawned. The Presidents' disregard for cool has made them a perennial groove. My own show was Saturday night in McCaw Hall, where my voice came back to me onstage strengthened by the acoustically simpatico ceiling. I was able to hit a lot of notes that I can't hit in real life. The crowd graciously sat through my two piano numbers mid-set and were rewarded with the Anglo harmonies of Sean Nelson and the SeaTac tones of Scott McCaughey at the end of the show. I got to play "Are You Experienced?" in my capacity of a rock 'n' roll tourist. Now I'm just off to have dinner with Scott and some friends prior to our traditional assault on the Two Bells, where hopefully Sean Nelson, The Presidents, Scott, Kurt Bloch and I can kick out the jams till we all meet next year. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/artsentertainment/2002027602_robyn06.ht ml ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Sep 2004 20:56:41 -0700 From: "Natalie Jacobs" Subject: orygun >>past the Cascade Mountains in a terrain called "high desert," which >>looks more like California than Oregon. > >That's really funny because MOST of Oregon is high desert. I've listened to snippets of early Human League and it seems too "Synth". There is only keyboard. More of what I'm looking for is human merging into machine sound, where as this stuff is mostly machine. I want more of a blend. I've been trying to find snippets of Shriekback, but most the good stuff is unavailable/expensive or not there to listen to. It seems their 1st 2 albums are the best, and sadly not on cd. Their 1st album "Care" was released on WEA. Ha, good luck ever seeing that come out on cd. WEA (a division of Warner Bros.) also released The Monochrome Set's "The Lost Weekend", which is the only MSet album not available on cd (except for a very little time in Japan). And apparently Warner just holds on to the stuff, they won't release it or sell the right to it... I'll be researching the other stuff mentioned (Pete Shelley,Colin Newman, early Ultravox etc.) before I purchase anything. And I'm still waiting to receive the Thomas Leer album I ordered last week. - -Nuppy - -- Brian nightshadecat@mailbolt.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Sep 2004 08:42:56 -0700 From: "Eb" Subject: RE: for the Wire fans among us I remember seeing that.
