Yes, he was a proper "front man" lead singer with a good conventional voice who jumped up and down and didn't play an instrument. Although Roy Wood was the lead guitarist, he wrote all the original material, and was probably better - that is, more distinctive - at singing his own quirky "Kilroy Was Here" / "Here We Go Round The Lemon Tree" type songs. According to: they were formed in 66 and disbanded in 72, with Carl Wayne leaving after "a misguided venture into the cabaret circuit" in 1970. He was replaced by the dreaded Jeff Lynne. It's a blow for the Hollies too, who kept Allan Clarke as lead singer for 36 or 37 years, with Carl Wayne only replacing him 4 years ago. I wonder who will get the Hollies' gig? - - Mike "just about to flip your mind, just about to trip your mind" Godwin PS I saw something about a Birmingham groups reunion gig quite recently, which CW was involved with. I don't know enough about the Birmingham scene, but some notable bands had their origins there: The Moody Blues, Denny Laine, Steve Gibbons, Spooky Tooth, Balls, the Move, The Idle Race, ELO, Black Sabbath, etc. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Sep 2004 11:17:31 -0400 From: "Brian" Subject: RE: more updates from Yep Roc > Hmmm, doesn't look good for a Michigan tour stop. > > Michael B. Part of it is the singing - Jeff Buckley seems to be reaching for emotional hystrionics - and it sounds like posturing to me. Plus, he never struck me as a very strong songwriter. Tim Buckley's singing, while equally emotive, sounds much more musical to me. While Tim Buckley often threw a lot of notes into a melody line, it hangs together as a musical interpretation of the melody, in key, and with each note carefully considered and placed. Jeff's singing sounds more ad-lib to me. Plus I think Tim Buckley was a very good songwriter. Of course, whenever I meet someone who loves Jeff Buckley, invariably they've never heard, or heard of, Tim Buckley. And if I play "Starsailor" for them, which I think is Tim's best album, they look at me like I'm crazy for even considering this to be comperable stuff.
