I can understand that being the view from outside. Inside, things look a bit different. See, as the article points out, the media limits political discussion to a very narrow spectrum in the US. I have no doubts that Kerry will be as "unimpressive" as Bush, but the SPIN will be completely different. The folks who opposed Bush will be so happy that he's out, they will praise or at least rationalize and forgive everything Kerry does. And the illusion of two distinct points of view will be maintained. The real difference between Republicans and Democrats is in how they are presented in the press, not in the actual positions on the issues. > If Kerry is considerably better than Bush, then the two party system > will continue. The Democrats will consider kerry "Their Boy" and can do no wrong. He will, no matter what, be viewed as better in their eyes. > And if Bush gets back, it probably won't matter - by 2008 there probably > won't be much to vote for anyway. There probably won't be elections anymore, anyway. But are there now? Joanna Newsom - I downloaded a track from her website and, although I like it, I don't know if I could put up with that "I am a mystical small child" thing over the course of an entire album... also, she is apparently the protege of Devendra "God, I wish I was Jeff Mangum" Banhart, who just annoys the fuck out of me. 2. I have nothing to say on the subject of Tanya Donelley's latest (she lost me with the second Belly album), but I did download a couple of tracks from the 50-Foot Wave EP (Kristin Hersh's latest project) - and - whew! She's all rockin' now! I guess the closest I can get to describing it is "first Throwing Muses album without the subtlety." Pretty intense shit. I had pretty much written her off after "The Grotto," but I think I might've been premature... 3. On a completely unrelated note, I saw "Garden State" yesterday... I thought it was well done, but if I see one more movie about a cute troubled young guy saved by the love of a quirky free-spirited gal, as hip indie music plays in the background, I think I'm gonna hurl. Or as my friend Maudie said, "I'm going to write a movie about a cute troubled young guy saved by the love of a fat, cranky, middle-aged woman." 4. On yet another unrelated note, I'm gonna see the Pixies next month! And Death Cab and the Decemberists are opening! If I manage to corner a stray Decemberist, I will ask him/her more about the tribute album. cheers, n. p.s. I can finally download music on my own computer (which has speakers) - hence the repeated references to said activity in this post, and probably many posts to come. _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. I saw her open for Bonnie Prince Billy last year. She was really really enjoyable, if a bit nervous. I was seated at a table next to some of her family members. After her set, she came out to talk to them. As she walked up to them, she managed to spill her drink on me, soaking me pretty well. She kept apologizing throughout the evening, looking completely embarrassed. I kept telling her it was no big deal, but she seemed overly traumatized by the whole thing. She's really very nice. A friend who went to the show with me picked up 2 of her CDR's. He said that he had trouble getting them to play. I never checked them myself, but might be able to look into sometime. Later, Marc on an odd note--between Joanna and the Polyphonic Spree 10 days later, I saw 2 bands/artists playing the harp for music that was not classical or religious. I don't recall seeing the harp at any other concerts I've ever attended. Broken promises don't upset me. I just think, why did they believe me? Haven't said much about this because my opinion, as Feg's resident Hersh-obsessive, is suspect, but here goes: (A) I was suspicious of this project. (B) I turn out to really like it a lot. (C) I might even recommend it to the prog-feg contingent, which makes it even odder that I like it. And (D) it's a little annoying that it's set up as an EP-only project. They're trying out new distribution ideas and the concept is basically six songs every 9 months or so. Which is cool, but I sure would like an album and I wish they'd just go the rest of the way towards following the obvious model of Wire Mark III (EP, EP, compilation with EP's worth of new tracks)... in Wire's case it resulted in both a nice buzz buildup and a really high quality LP to follow it up. I'm still not over the fact that Kristin lives in LA and 50 Foot Wave is now a "local act" for me. Cool. There are some good opening bands on that Pixies tour... I see Mission of Burma (!!!) is the support on some shows back east. - -Rex - -- _______________________________________________ Find what you are looking for with the Lycos Yellow Pages http://r.lycos.com/r/yp_emailfooter/http://yellowpages.lycos.com/default.asp?SRC=lycos10 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 2004 15:18:28 -0500 From: "Fortissimo" Subject: Re: diverse subjects On Thu, 19 Aug 2004 09:21:02 -0800, "Rex Broome" said: > Nat: > > 1. Not Nat (hey, that looks cool & is fun to type) - but Mary Timony doesn't strike me as having that voice or outlook. Probably helps that I knew her stuff from Helium's _Pirate Prude_ EP onward - so the evolution into her quasi-medieval thing is clear to me, and that stuff is tempered by the more aggressive outlook/sound of that EP and _Pat's Trick_. But the singer from the Cranes - yeesh, are you sure she's not a 33 sped up to 45 (for Ye Olde Vinyl Contingent)? PS: Confoundingly, Lilys have re-released _Precollection_ in the UK, redoing several tracks and adding three new ones. If you thought _Precollection_'s sound was kinda thin and demo-ish, you might like these versions better (you might like them anyway). Even more confoundingly, the CD appears to be called _The Lilys_ - even though the band name is usually - and implicitly, given this release's artwork - just plain "Lilys." That wacky Kurt Heasley! (Annoyingly, the Rainbow Quartz website - the label of issue - doesn't sell it to the US. But I found a store at amazon.co.uk that was selling it for 7 pounds - even with the shipping, the cost was little more than a domestic CD (probably about 18-20 bucks in the end). - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: crumple zones:: :: harmful or fatal if swallowed :: :: small-craft warning :: ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 2004 18:24:07 -0400 From: "Maximilian Lang" Subject: Dresden Dolls on Kimmel tonight Will they turn off her spotlight?
