Clicking here will launch a streaming snippet of the song. Leaving New York on first listen harks back to Automatic for the People, with clear vocals, a lack of electronics and Peter's trademark chiming guitar filling out the mix. The song features the lyrics "you might have laughed if I told you / you might have hidden the frown / you might succeeded in changing me / i might have been turned around / its easy to leave than to be left behind / leaving was never my proud / leaving new york never easy / I saw the light fading out" Previously, Stipe had described the song as a love song. Whether this means its a metaphoric love song to the city or a love song to a person has yet to be determined. http://www.warnerreprise.com/qt-ref/rem_leavingnewyorksnippet_ref.mov that is all.... carry on. mike ===== - ------------------------------------------------- "there is water at the bottom of the ocean" - talking heads _________________________________________________________ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? A bit of a period piece, true, but the performances are golden. I can't say enough good things about that Tanya Donelly album. It's wonderful and heartbreaking. I should clarify that while I'm known as an avid partisan for the Throwing Muses camp, I've never been a particular fan of Tanya's solo records and even probably like Belly less than many (having relistened to Star after getting Whisky Tango Ghosts, I've reconfirmed my suspicion that, while I've listened to it a fair amount through the years, and it has some great moments, it's like a lot of records of its era where it was somewhat pleasantly ubiquitous in that it was sorta popular, well-pedigreed, and we were all happier to hear it on the radio or at parties than Alice in Chains... thus it, like the Breeders record, kinda became de-facto indie "classics" without being all that consistent as an album). Anyways, I don't think that I'd ever have put a TD record in my actual year-end Top 10 until now. This record is not budging from my top 5. It won't be everybody's cup of tea, but I call it a quantum leap for her, and I find myself deeply touched by this album. >>and one robyn hitchcock cover! "sweet ghost of light"! whoa! (i >>wonder if this cover has anything to do with the tribute album that colin >>meloy referred to recently as well). Wow. I hope that shows up somewhere. It would fit brilliantly on the record, which has two straight-up ghost songs in the same stark mode and plenty of other "unseen spooky presence related to love lost or misplaced" references. If it doesn't appear, though, and you have a jones for a version of SGOL with female vocals, I refer you to Mr. Brian Nupp who will likely be happy to hook you up with Lazerlove5's version, which is very nice indeed. Carnt be arsed with searching the archives, but I recall Robyn in an interview having some good things to say about Tanya and "Feed the Tree" (which I just sang at Karaoke, oddly enough) in particular. Anyone? - -Rex ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V13 #233 ********************************
