[Jeff Dwarf ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 2 Aug 2004 21:38:14 -0700 From: Eb Subject: CVB [Hmmm...doesn't exactly sound like a "fun" record, does it?] CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN RETURN WITH NEW ROMAN TIMES -First album with all original members in 14 years- Pitch-a-Tent and Vanguard records proudly announce the return of one of indie-rock's founding fathers Camper Van Beethoven. The band's new album, NEW ROMAN TIMES, due in stores on October 12, 2004, is their first since 1989's Key Lime Pie. The record, a rock opera, loosely tells the story of a young juvenile delinquent from Texas who joins an elite military unit. Although the band has had many lineup changes, New Roman Times brings back the classic CVB lineup of David Lowery (guitar and vocals); Jonathan Segel (violin); Victor Krummenacher (bass); Greg Lisher (guitar) and Chris Pederson (drums). Other key members along the way such as Chris Molla and David Immergluck also lend a hand to the proceedings. Admittedly perturbed by the ways of the Bush administration, the birth of NEW ROMAN TIMES runs much deeper than being inspired by America's political climate. Lowery wanted to tell his story from a soldier's point of view because he has a certain "affinity and empathy" for them based on the fact that his father as well as many of his uncles are military veterans. Obsessed with making sure his tales were based in fact, he visited military chat rooms and got soldiers, some serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, to give him commentary on weapons and weapons systems. "But this story isn't really supposed to be about Iraq, Afghanistan or even war," he notes. "It's actually about the deep gulf between the 'red' and the 'blue' parts of the country. I made it a sci-fi alternate reality so that I could exaggerate the differences. Plus I could make things lighter and more tongue in cheek." Formed in 1985 in Santa Cruz, CA, Camper Van Beethoven went on to help create the historic, still vibrant scene known as indie-rock along with other luminaries such as Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Husker Du, The Minutemen and The Bad Brains. CVB's self-described "surrealist absurdist folk," put the post into modern with its genre jumping antics and brought humor and levity to this heady scene at its most nascent stage. From "Take the Skinheads Bowling" to "Joe Stalin's Cadillac" to inspired instrumentals to covers of songs by Sonic Youth, Status Quo, Pink Floyd as well as a note for note rendition of Fleetwood Mac's seminal Tusk in its entirety, CVB always thrilled their fans with their freewheeling iconoclasm. By the time they made Key Lime Pie however, song craft and maturity replaced the band's early more sardonic and mischievous ways, and it's here, from which the work for NEW ROMAN TIMES picks up and begins. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Aug 2004 01:08:53 -0400 From: Ken Weingold Subject: Re: Indiana Jones and The Lost Fart On Mon, Aug 2, 2004, The Mammal Brain wrote: > by the way, how come none of you mozilla geeks have been pimping the > firefox?? i'm not a fan of the mozilla browser, but firefox is the fucking > *goods*. still some kinks to iron out, to be sure. but, shit, i never > dreamed i could be passionate about a friggin' *browser*. yow! Firefox is the only browser I'll use anymore in Windows. I've used it for at least two years now. It was originally Phoenix, then Firebird, and now Firefox. There's an extention for it that randomly changed the name, to make fun of that. I tend to count "The beginning of the Enz in there which, though released later, has a lot of early material. As to Phil Judd, he produced some better 9and less rambling) stuff later with the bands the Swingers (especially the hit "Counting the beat") and Schnell Fenster (a band which contained a number of ex-Enzers, and which had a small hit with the lovely "Whisper"), whose fiest album "The sound of trees" is worth hunting down if you like the Enz. He later moved into working on flim scores, notably for that blackest of comedies, "Death in Brunswick". But yes, you're right. Not quite like changing bassists from Stu Sutcliffe to Paul McCartney, but pretty close. > Again, it was a nice part for Robyn, and it makes me wonder if he will >try to land any more movie work. Well, it's a shame that Chris Eccleston's got the role of Dr Who next... that would've suited him! I'd cast him as the slightly sinister proprietor of a small and eccentric company, perhaps, or maybe an undercover operative for a vaguely unusual government agency. He'd have fit in very well in the Men In Black movies as far as the latter is concerned (and then possibly he could have delivered that Feg-pinpoint line "Congratulations Reg, it's a squid"). Marc's sig file, meanwhile, contained this: >I think a good scene in a movie would be where one scientist tells another >scientist, "You know what will save the world? You're holding it in your >hand." And the other scientist looks, and in his hand are peanuts. A-ha! That gives me an idea -- Robyn could play several characters from any filmed version of "A Series Of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket (not Count Olaf and his villanous acting troupe, but the sinister people that actually mean no harm). - -- dolph ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Aug 2004 12:50:32 +0100 From: "Matt Sewell" Subject: Feggig pics!
