They played at Bath University hall many years ago, in the days before the powers restricted it to lectures only. All I remember is the weird clown outfits and mechanical doll movements. As with so many bands of that era (I won't mention Japan), they seemed to me to be over-influenced by Roxy Music. (The show was two weeks ago, but the formatting problems threw me into an ecstasy of despair so I didn't want to try re-posting it until now... anyway...) I went to the show with my friend Naomi, a hardcore fan who had also seen SY in Seattle and Vancouver the previous two nights. The Crystal Ballroom was, as usual, miserably hot. The first opening act was Jackie-O Motherfucker, who, I think, are from Portland and whom I had always assumed to be some sort of glam-rock band, but they turned out to be an atmospheric, almost rootsy-sounding band with a bit of an experimental edge. The second opening act was Wolf Eyes, who went to my high school (Community High School in Ann Arbor), and who produced an assaultive wall of noise, complete with gongs, ghastly un-mellow saxophones, and screaming. I took a bathroom break during their set and it was funny to make my way through the crowd and see EVERYONE with their fingers in their ears. I found the band very cathartic but was glad that they only played half an hour. Then the Yoof hit the stage... or rather, meandered onto the stage during the prolonged intro to "I Love You Golden Blue," off their latest album, and the extreme rockitude began. Perhaps it goes without saying (or perhaps it doesn't), but they were fucking incredible - especially considering that 4/5ths of them are practically old enough to be my parents. They mostly played stuff from their new album, with a few oldies but goodies thrown in. Thurston rubbed his guitar all over his body and rolled around on the ground, Kim danced wildly (she was wearing white panties, just so you know) and played the trumpet on "Pacific Coast Highway," Lee made strange and wonderful sounds with a variety of implements applied to his guitars, Jim whalloped his huge Gibson Thunderbird bass while looking slightly disgruntled, and Steve just plain rocked. There wasn't much stage banter, but at one point, Thurston announced, "I don't want to tell you who to vote for... but I suggest you vote for whoever's the smartest." We were standing over by Lee and Jim - Naomi had nobly given up her usual spot by Thurston so I could see Jim better, and seeing him was grand indeed, but it was truly awe-inspiring to see Lee, whose voice and music I've loved for so long, standing there rocking his ass off two feet in front of me. When they played "Teenage Riot," during their second encore, I realized I was watching one of my new favorite musicians (namely, Jim) playing a song I'd heard for the first time thirteen years previously in the old MC5 house in Ann Arbor where I used to live, and was overcome with mingled joy and nostalgia. The show ended with Lee and Thurston scraping their guitars repeatedly against each other, producing a wonderfully excruciating noise. Tinfoil sculptures were dispensed to all band members, and Jim got the obligatory kiss on the cheek as well. He tucked his tinfoil bunny into the arms of Froggy, the toy frog on the cover of the Halfway to a Threeway EP - apparently he carries those stuffed animals around with him. I also had a nice chat with Steve Shelley about our mutual home state of Michigan. Nobody else wanted to talk to him - maybe they didn't recognize him? I dunno, but if you see Sonic Youth, give Steve some love. I saw Split Enz live about three times, and the main thing I remember about him was his relentless energy - he'd be doing pressups and running around like mad in any instrumental breaks. Best thing about the Enz concerts (excluding the music, of course) was Noel Crombie's experimental lighting/clothing/set combinations - things like the first show of the night one time being entirely under UV light with them in fluorescing costumes (this was around the time of True Colours or Waiata, so it was a new concept then). One stand-out performance I remember was at a later show, and something I wish had been recorded - a version of "Working up an appetite" which started with normal instrumentation but ended up with a rhythm free-for all with Nigel Griggs on bass, Paul Hester on drums, Eddie Rayner on synth drums, Noel Crombie on percussion and both Finn brothers on bongos.
