Today I checked my e-mail before leaving the house (8:30 AM CDT or thereabouts), and everything was OK. Work was busy this morning and I didn't get a chance to check it again until around 1 PM. My 10 MB Mindspring inbox was completely full, and, in fact, appears to have filled up shortly after 9 AM. It looks like someone forged my e-mail as the "reply-to" address on a massive virus mailing, and I got hit with all the bounces -- well, that, or someone hit me with several hundred copies of a virus that masquerades as a legitimate bounce, or a combination thereof. Anyway, at 40-43K a pop, it didn't take long for them to overwhelm my account. They're still trickling in, as a matter of fact. I don't think my computers were used to send them -- the home PC is behind the router's hardware firewall, there's nothing suspicious in my Webmail "Sent" folder, and Norton Anti-Virus regularly scans all my machines. I'll take another look at everything today to see if something slipped past the defenses. Anyway, if you sent me anything since 9 AM this morning, I haven't seen it. And I'll probably have to re-subscribe to a lot of e-mail lists. Bother. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jul 2004 13:30:14 -0700 (PDT) From: Eb Subject: Re: virus, gonna kill ya It's the "MyDoom.M" virus, probably. Here's the links from Symantec and McAfee: http://tinyurl.com/5483s http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus_k=127033 I'm about 90% sure that it's all those Google hits on my e-mail from all the infected machines that caused this problem for me, rather than my own machines propagating the worm. However, my confidence in Norton Anti-Virus is somewhat shaken. I updated the virus definitions this very morning, and Symantec hasn't updated them as of 3:30 PM CDT this afternoon, though they claim the latest definitions should catch this darn thing. However, when I set NAV to scan some .zip attachments I *knew* were copies of the virus, it passed them through as clean! So I'm guessing part of the success of this bug is that it's slipping past at least one of the big names in anti-virus protection. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jul 2004 20:41:33 -0400 From: fingerpuppets Subject: Re: More Robyn on STG one time at band camp, Dr John Halewood (john@unidec.co.uk) said: >Apologies to woj for stealing his usual job away from him, but I thought I'd >mention the following: no problem -- i was out-of-town over the weekend so i appreciate the back-up. >http://torrent.sharingthegroove.org/details.php?id=894 with stg being currently upgraded, a lot of torrents have moved to easytree. this show has been reseeded there at http://bt.easytree.org/torrents-details.php?id=2395&hit=1 here are the details again for the fegmaniax-announce folks who didn't get this first time around... >Robyn Hitchcock (solo) >May 21, 1991 >Kennel Club >San Francisco, California > >Lineage: FM->Cassette Master (no dolby)->DAT (32kHz)-> >PC (via Lynx One digital I/O) -> SHN (560MB) > >Resampling, normalization to 0 dB, Fade in/outs via Sound Forge >cdwave used for track splits. >Sound Forge info: Sound Forge Studio 6.0d (build 219) >CDWave info: version 1.71, build 0000.0A28 > >Originally a KALX FM "Cabinet Tapes" program. I've always loved the biting social commentary of tracks like "Charlie's Enormous Mouth", "Dumb All Over" and "Heavenly Bank Account". Zappa, apart from being IMHO, one of the most talented composers to ever live, seemed to consider himself a sort of social anthropologist and equal opportunity offender. His critics always seem to harp on the fact that many of his songs are misogynistic or sexist, but there are just as many "stupid guy" songs in his recorded work as "stupid woman" songs. I saw an interview with him once in which he said that the only reason he even started putting lyrics to his compositions is that no-one was interested in modern music any longer and that the only way to get anyone to listen was to shock 'em with the lyrics. The "Flo and Eddie" band took some of this to ridiculous extremes. (Just listening to "Magdalene" makes me wince). Lately my favorite Zappa has been '74 band that did "One Size Fits All". If you love that album as much as I do I'd also suggest "Roxy and Elsewhere" and "YCDTOSA Vol 2 (The Helsinki Concert). Definitely the tightest band he ever toured with. And Rex, if Zappa's PMRC testimony turns you on pick up "Meets the Mothers of Prevention". Hearing Al Gore gush about what a huge fan he is of Zappa never fails to make me chuckle. Republican bashers (of which I know there are many on this list) should check out "Broadway the Hard Way" in which Zappa shits all over the Reagan administration. Throw some specific names at me and I'll tell you what I think, but overall, I don't feel like his "stupid guy" stuff is anywhere near as anti-male as his "stupid woman" stuff is anti-female. I mean, we're not even counting "Heavenly Bank Account" as a "stupid man" song, are we? Moreover, Zappa's "stupid men" are often portrayed as transgressing against a specific ideal of masculinity, whereas the "stupid women" don't really have anywhere to turn. One suspicion of mine is that it's all summed up in Zappa's comment about how there are more ugly people than beautiful people, with himself solidly on the side of the "ugly". And I think that sometimes, Zappa's personal opinion that men were ugly and women were beautiful (mostly) got entangled with his use of "ugliness" as a metaphor for anti-elitism. Anyway, yeah, he considered himself an equal opportunity offender. He was wrong. His scorn about women and semi-gay men* is nothing like the way he treats racial humor (as Jeff Norman pointed out to me a few months ago). It only all looked the same to the kind of timid Puritans that Zappa liked shocking. * I can't think of any characters in his songs who are just gay, and yet homosexuality keeps coming up. It's all about straight men whose sexuality is complicated by the presence of butch lesbians/record executives raping them in jail/Punky Meadows/etc. a ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 2004 14:21:17 -0400 (EDT) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: intellect/soul, soul/intellect On Fri, 23 Jul 2004, steve wrote: > The first issue was dismissing *all* Zappa, which you obviously don't. > My comment intended for the universe of Zappa criticism, rather than as > a reply to a particular post. Oh, that's true -- I wouldn't criticize late Zappa for being too wanky just on account of the all-solos releases. Why did I even use that as an example? Huh. My whole problem with some of his post-79 albums is that the guitar records aren't *enough* of a footnote... he'd already proved that he could work plenty of guitar soloing into a song and have it work as a song, and yet some tunes seemed to become just life-support units for guitar solos. a ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 2004 12:14:11 -0700 From: Vendren Subject: Re: drill a hole in that substrate, and tell me what you spree > Fab music bought this week: > * The Polyphonic Spree - Together We're Heavy > * Jim White - Drill A Hole In That Substrate, and Tell Me What You See Two albums I quite like.
